Electric Brake Release

One thing that is a pain in the back on my '03 Super duty is the parking brake release handle. It's located close to the steering column and is difficult to reach with an arthritic back.

Does anyone know if there is an electric release that can be added on that will pop the parking brake off when the shifter is moved out of the park position, or maybe one I can rig up with a push-button?

I also have an 03 f250, I found that I'm able to pull the release with my foot.It doesn't take much to release the brake. Although I don't have back problems ,I'm just to lazy to bend down. Hopefully you can try this and it will possibly help.

Oh, I suppose I could carry a back scratcher around with me in the cab and just use that to hook the release handle, but I was hoping for something a little more luxurious. I'll give the foot idea a try. That also gives me some ideas about rigging up some foot linkage from the release handle to the firewall base.

I would think if you can find a electric fuel pump shutoff solenoid that has a spring return, should work really well, but will probably be expensive, unless you find used parts.

You guys got me thinking...We had some E series ambulances a while ago that released by stepping on the peddle just like setting it. That'd work great! Anyone remember what I'm talking about?

bneafus... my parents had a Buick that was like that. Never had any problems with that setup... Maybe you could get a pedal out of a 97 Buick regal and retrofit it? I dunno
I'll be watching this thread, too!

I would imagine that you could also put in one of those heavy duty door popper solenoids (do a google to see who sells them) that the hotrodders use when they shave their door handles. It seems like you could just build a bracket to attach to the P-brake bracket to hold the solenoid and attach the pull arm of the solenoid to the arm of P-brake that holds and pulls the release cable, or to the cable itself. And then wire in a switch somewhere up on the dash. And even if the solenoid were to fail, you could still pull the P-brake handle to release it.

Maybe you can copy the setup from an old Caddy Brougham. They release when you take the column shifter out of park and have a handle release backup. I'm pretty sure this was done mechanically without any electrical help.

My '97 Mark VIII Lincoln has the electronic brake release. Put it in gear, brakes go off. I don't know if I've ever even used my emergency brake on my truck...don't know if it has it or not. If it doesn't, it SHOULD!

Not trying to get off topic but do you guys really use your parking brake that much? I have never really used them. The two times I used them in my older vehicles they ended up getting stuck, so now I try to use them about once a month just to keep them from rusting up too bad.

I use mine regularly, but not on extremely cold nights (which we don't get here in the South too often). I've had brake shoes freeze to the drums during icy weather.

Evidently, I use mine too much. Last Friday the cable end broke off at the pedal.

When your "daily driver" is a vehicle that will ROLL AWAY if you don't use the parking brake, you get used to setting it before getting out. After enough years of this, setting the parking brake on the "little" truck is something you do without even thinking about it.

Not to mention that every manufacturer I've ever seen makes a point to mention that the parking pawl in an automatic tranny isn't meant for holding the vehicle's weight.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks the P-brake setup in the SD is more than a little awkward.
