Headers work best if the tubes are equal length. You can make them closer to equal with long tubes. (Less percentage of error.) Larger diameter for high rpm work, smaller dia for low end torque. Gains can be made with shorties, but as a rule you get better results with long tubes.
shorties will be more of a bolt in swap. long tubes will require additional exhaust work to get hooked up properly. also if you ever plan on doing a SAS long tubes wont work
So long tube headers won't run into the transmission crossmember??? I remember someone a while back who worried about this and I haven't heard anything since. I'm asking this question because I've got a built 351 with about 500 horses that I can put in my bronco. It already has long tube headers on it, so I'm trying to figure out if I will absolutely have to get shorties before doing the swap.
Ok, I'll Give You The Long Version. 85 Bronco 351 H.o. C6. Walker Dynomax Long Tube Headers And Dynomax True Dual Exhaust With Two High Flow 13" Long Cats And 11" Dual In Dual Out Magnaflow Muffler. It Was A Total Pain In The ****. I Had To Notch The Passenger Side Frame An Inch And Adjust The Tilt Of The Motor A Few (many) Times To Get It To Clear The Front Drive Shaft... I Read That Other People Had The Same Exact Problems And Solutions, I Can Not Recommend These Headers If You Are Looking For An Easy Fit, I Chose Them Because They Are Matched To The Dual Exhaust, Well The Exhaust Is Simply A Waste Of Time. The Passenger Side Was No Trouble At All, But The Drivers Side Comes With A 90 Degree Pipe That Crosses Over To The Passenger Side, Because Of The Transfer Case, But That Pipe Runs All The Way Under The Passenger Side Frame, And Then Angles Back Slightly As It Runs Towards The Back. Luckily I Had Another Vehicle Because I Spent A Lot Of Time Measuring And Cuttling And I Modified The Pipe To Turn Back Just Before The Hump In The Crossmember And Then Turn Up. The Crossover Pipe Had To Be Wrapped In Header Tape Because It Was Too Close To The Tranny. If I Did Not Use Cats I Could Have Used Just About Any Muffler, But I Tried Several And The Magnaflow I Found Was The Only One That Fit Perfect For What I Did. Now, All This Being Said, The End Result Is An Awsome Sounding Truck. I Picked Up A Lot Of Power For About $550 And About 2-3 Better Mpg's. But If I Had To Do It All Over Again I Would Either Try Some Hookier Of Headman Long Tubes, Or Shorties, And Have The Exhaust Done At A Reputable Shop. Let Me Know If You Have Questions, I Feel Like An Expert Now For Having Done This.
84-86 H.o.'s Have 4 Bbl Carbs And 210 Hp. I Heard They Also Have A Hotter Cam. I Won't Guess How Much Power I Picked Up, But I Can Spin The 32" Tires A Couple Feet Now And Do At Least 100 On The Highway, Couldn't Even Come Close To That Before, And That's With A Real Crappy Carb, Which Is The Next Thing To Be Replaced. One Thing That I Should Have Mentioned On My First Posting, For Those Of You Who Do Not Already Know This, The Y Pipes On Broncos And Pickups Suck!!! If You Do Nothing Else, You Should Go To An Exhaust Shop And Have Them Make You A Larger Diameter Y Pipe, And Replace The Cat While You Are At It. Sorry For Hijacking The Thread
get a good quality set of shorties like gibson, jba, bbk etc and run the bassani y pipe. the bbk headers for your application will have 2.5" collector the y pipe will be 2.5" into a 3" in/out cat. this will work well with your proclaimed 500 hp 5.8.
a guy named Dave Pickrel makes custom exhaust parts for Gen 1 Lightnings, he makes a set of long tube headers for the Lightning, and the DO fit around the E4OD, you do have to notch the frame on the Pass side, but they are designed to fit on the truck will all the stock accessories. http://www.nloc.net/vbforum/forumdisplay.php?f=465
take a look at what he has, everyone on the Lightning forums raves about his work, and i am planning buying a set of headers from him for my '93 Lightning.
