the truck is a reg cab swb. m5 4.9l 300. I had one of these before cept it was an 89 and a week after i got it the head cracked on the "super tough" inline 300. Now i honestly love this setup and engine but im afraid that i will run into this problem again as the truck has 170000 miles on it and the place is also asking 2900 for it. The body is flawless and everything seems ok when i test drive it. At first startup its has a bit of trouble and also has a bit of a miss or hesitation when you goose the throttle.
I would guess it just needs a good tune-up. Ask the owner when it was last done. If very reciently, maybe more problems, but if he doesn't know probably all it is. Make sure it doesn't have champion plugs in it. These I6's generally wont run well on them at all.
I wouldn't worry about cracking another head, Of all the motors I have delt with it is one of the best.
These trucks generally run for 100's of thousands of miles. The head cracking was a fluke and definitely not a common problem. It was likely overheated at one point in its life, perhaps right before it was sold, and that's what caused the head to crack.
In other words, don't worry about the engine - it's the most reliable moving part in the whole truck.
Like kell said - could be a lot of things. Tune-up is the most likely. Whatever it is, it's not serious and probably won't take long to diagnose and fix.
wellk im worried about it because the first truck did the same thing. i even did a tune up and used autolite platnums, also changed cap and rotor, and wires and the truck still did it
Check the timing, and fuel pressure if the tune-up fails. Might have a weak pump or clogged filter. A haynes manual should say what the pressure should be under different conditions. Also add some injector cleaner to your tank (sure won't hurt anything)
If all else fails, try a little higher octaine gas. 170000 on the clock, it might just need a little better stuff.
yea but this guy will finance with me :P i think im gonna go ahead and get it and try my luck with it. idk y but i love the 300 mated to a 5spd in a regcab swb truck. my next question is can i run true dual exaust and see any benefit, and also can i make it sound good?
Well i dont think 2900 is that much whats the market for those trucks around where your from i got my 93 for 3900 basically very beautiful shape for the year some rust but hardly noticeable low kms too i could find for these years and was well cared for another thing was that 5.8 (351) powerplant..
