I'm new at all this so... I'm wanting to lift my explorer about 3" to 3 1/2". I've got the front end under control with longer spings (1 1/2") and studs with a 2" coil spacer. The rear is where I have some questions. A buddy of mine is suggesting an axle filp. I'm not sure exactly what all that entails. Am I going to need new hangers and/or shackles? Any help would be great.
not familiar with your rig, but an axle flip is where your axle (now) is on top of your rear springs and the flip part is where you take out the entire axle housing assembly and put it under your springs. Get it? So you gain the height of your spring pack and you could maybe put in a small spacer to level it all out.
Nope...just 4 U bolts.. jack up the rear put it on jack stands...unbolt the U-bolts that hold your axle to your leaf packs....un bolt the leaf packs from the shackels and proceed to now put your axle under the leaf pack rather than above it. Your best bet is to do this one side at a time unless you have a 2 post lift at home. Of course make sure that you then torque everything to spec using a torque wrench. You can probaly look up more detailed directions if you use the search function in this thread.
Just make sure you are careful while youre doing it and make sure to have an alignment done afterward just to make sure you got everything back right.

You dont really need to weld new perches on...there are flip kits out there that allow you to just unbolt and bolt. You can weld on spring perches if you like but from what Ive heard the flip kits do just fine. Like I stated before do a search (either here or a search engine) for it and you should be able to come up with something.

you can spend that money and buy a retrofit swap kit or spend $20 and get 2 peices of c- channel and weld it to the axle. new perches can be bought, either way they WILL HAVE to be welded on. dont forget to get your pinion angle right. i like the c-channel cause its super strong and cheap. if you do use channel, dont forget to drill a hole in the center for the spring pin to set in. we do jeep wranglers all the time here at my 4wd shop. you should get the the amount of the leaf pack and half the thickness of the axle in inches of lift. be sure to measure to see you dont get to high in the rear. hope this helps
The factory did not bolt on perches, so you should not either. Please weld them on, or have them welded on. You can go the inexpensive way with c-channel, but really! A spring perch is about $11.00 ea.. If you are gonna think about going cheap, go cheap on something that your life does not depend on, like your stereo, or the shade of your window tint, not your axle. Please consider dong this "SOA" (spring over axle) conversion the right way. It is very easy, and reasonably inexpensive, and is safe if it is done right.
I plan on doing this conversion the right way and the safe way. Thank you guys for all your help. I'll let ya know how it all goes. Any idea on how much of a lift I should expect? It's a 92 explorer sport 2x4.
I never said anything about it being cheap matter of fact they run about 200 bucks for a good kit...you could also just swap a ranger rear end under there as well..7.5 vs 8.8 but it is the same size axle housing w/ the perches on top. Besides...a good bolt is always better than a bad weld.

lol spring perches being welded in? ehh its optional
i'd go to a trailer supply place an buy some new perches (make sure they are the same width) and re weld them on in the same exact position as the stock ones but 180*. yea the c-channel is a good idea but come on, for the time it would take to cut and drill and make pretty you could just slap a couple of pads made for the application! but thats just me!
you dont need new plates and u-bolts as they should still work. yes you are SUPPOSED to use new u-bolts but you are supposed to also drive the speed limit!
the amount if lift you gain will be the face of the stock spring plate to the face of the new pads, i'd say b/t 3 and 4"
sounds to me those kits are as wonderful as those SAS conversion kits that cost like $2000 when you can do it with j-yard parts for the cost of the axle! i wouldnt waste the time or money, just a gimmick
sometimes i wonder about the quality of information given here!

Well guys... I'm happy to say the snow and ice only slowed me down. The axle flip is complete. I did in fact use a Kit i got off ebay. Welding was required and went pretty smoothly. I got about 3 1/4" lift. looks pretty beefy. I like it. If any one knows where I can find pro-comp x-terrains 33x10.5x15 for less than 200 buck a peice... please let me know. Also, I found a high performance intake for my truck, the only thing is... i've never heard of this company, check it out and let me know what ya'll think.
