Front axle help

Hi all, I'm kinda new at this 4x4 thing so bear with me. I'm in the process of doing the front brakes and greasing the hub bearings. Well brakes are going fine. But after removing the hub assembly, the part with the needle bearings in it that I'm going to regrease. I noticed the seal that goes into the axle past the U-joints is flopping around. I can also move the axle around about a 1/2" or so where it goes into the axle housing. Should I be able to move it? The U-joints seem to be fine along with the ball joints. Any thoughts, suggestions should these seals be replaced while I'm in there? Thanks Tuke

I can't answer about the seal, but without the wheel bearing/hub installed, The axle should have some play. The needle bearing and the hub support the outer end of the axle.

all that is normal...unfortunately. I'm in the process of doing the whole knuckle deal. You might want to check out this thread, racerguy did a fine job explaining with pix how to replace the balljoints. The thread won't address your question but it clearly shows what you're talking about is normal. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...d.php?t=354091 Hope it helps...two weeks after the fact.

clarification, it's normal but not the way it is when new. due to the movement you describe, which is typical, the seal gets wipes out and separate into two pieces. one part stays fixed to the axle, the outer shell comes loose and flops around...absolutely ****ty design.
