First - want to thank all of you for your continued help in solving my troubles / questions.
On to my next question - I am installing that big block 460 in my '64, for the most part I would have to say it has been pretty smooth going. Well tonight I dropped my new distributor in so I could check clearance on my temp gauge line and found a problem. The distributor is a HEI style, so it is quite a bit larger in diameter. Is is pretty tall and desigend for the 460, but it hits the water neck/thermostat. Has anyone installed a new HEI distributor, did you have the same problem? Does anyone know if there any different angle water neck that could be used? Will a GM neck bolt on to the manifold?
what year water housing do you have? i used a hei and it has about 1/16 inch space between the housing and dist. i had a little issue with the temp sending unit, but i just had to find the proper fitting to drop it low enough to the intake. the housing i believe is off a 70 lincoln. but the local parts shop should have a small selection from various years. by the way, the hei is a perfect upgrade.
VOH... I ran into this same problem a while back and gave up and just thought the distributor was unuseable and put it on the shelf and wrote it off as a bad buy. I read your post and started looking at some different necks. It looks like the one from an e-350 van might work. Is that what you used? I hope this thread makes it to you I just joined up.
59F100...the thermostat that i used was for a 73 f250 460, napa number BK 6051090. this neck has a angled flat side on it that allows for the clearance between the dist. & neck. It was like $11. It works just fine, it will even come off with the dist installed.
I'm gonna use a re-curved Duraspark, no clearance issues.
If you decide to get a new distributor, consider our custom curved Duraspark Distributor built with our new Full Length Oil Impregnated Bronze Bushing. The full length bushing improves timing stability and spark scatter. If stock appearance is not an issue, take a look at our one piece D.U.I. Distributor. Whether you choose the Duraspark or the D.U.I., we curve each on a distributor machine based on your engine combination. Please see them at:
