the mechanic that pulled the ring gear tells me it has 184 teeth, so the question is how do I find a starter that will fit nice and snug onto this bell housing considering that it is a 460 engine that was not original (most likely an '85 mounted on a '77 truck). I have gone through starters like crazy chewing the bendix all the time and now the ring gear wore out which prompted all this .
Thanks
PS I would love to post a few pics of this, how do I attach a file? I don't see any browse button?
Hello I have a '77 F100 4WD,manual. Apparently the truck originally came with a 351M, 335 series engine.
One of the previous owners replaced the motor with an '85 460 pulled from an RV.
I have had to replace the starter several times as it gets beeing chewed up, rocks and makes horrible grinding sounds. The ring gear had to be replaced as it too was being worn by these starters that wear out and apparently don't fit right.
As I don't want to repeat the costly experience of swapping ring gear, and starters I would like to find out what the perfect match should be. The current new starter was bought from a local part store and has 9 teeth to the bendix (still kicks a bit) is supposed to fit a '77 manual w/ 460.
I cannot for sure establish the model of the bellhousing it appears to be a C6 (7inches 3/4 between the top bolts) although I understand there are two different C6 made to accomodate different size engines. To complicate matters the ring gear has 184 teeth and not 180 as the book calls for.
What should be the correct match between starter and flywheel to avoid making the same previous mistakes?
Thanks to Milion and Torque for their help in identifying the different engine components to this riddle.
Thanks for the reply. I have been looking through online part stores to find out what model engine had a RG with 184 teeth. The only one and can find around that time frame '77 is :
4.9L 300 L6 1BBL (B)
Forgive my total lack of knowledge but is this different from a 390?
Also from the numbers on the gear box you had mentioned the original engine was probably a 351M/335 series, any similarities.
Thanks again for all your help, I really appreciate it, it has been so frustrating not having the truck run right for so long, I am bound and determined to fix it right this time.
