i have a 2000 cc 4x4 super duty v10 3.73 gears when towing for the first time i had no power to tow up hill i was towing a four placed snowmobile trailer with 4 sleds in it it is enclosed i could not get the truck to maintain 50 mph tranny didn't shift rite away tranny seems fine when it does shift it picks up some but not v10 425 pounds of torque like. fuel filter changed as well as the air filter any help already posted on the super duty threads
I tow 7000lbs every weekend, 2004 CC 2wd 3.73.
On a long grade it will drop out of OD, that is at 65 mph it jumps from about 1800 rpm to 2700.
I have never felt that a gear change would be worth the money and that's only 1 "rear end".
Doesn't sound like your hauling much weight, maybe you can have a dealer look for trouble codes and make sure it has the proper program.
it runs smoothly the maf sensor was cleaned recently to keep it at 45 it had to rev about 3500-4000 rpms and it was at more than half throttle. how much of a difference would the gear change make the 3.73 can't be that bad or ford would have sold none my 2001 chevy 6.0 pulled better than this that is why i am looking for some help
As a snowmobiler also I have to ask you and knowing the lack of snow this season.
Was this the first time pulling the trailer this season and/or your trailer brakes stuck?
Trailer tire pressure ok?
My first towing experience with my 02 V10 (with a bad fuel filter) and a 3place enclosed trailer I could pull in OD @ 70-75 mph at will. Couple of hills did come out of OD but I wasn`t even pushing it hard to maintain that speed up hills. My truck also has 3.73 gears........
I just recently towed a heavy load from California to Colorado. My truck has 4.30s. The first half of the trip was with 35" tires on it. Pulled horrible, couldnt maintain speed on grades. Infact pulled most grades in 2nd gear with the engine screaming near 5000rpm. I stopped in St. George Utah and had my stock wheels and tires swapped back on and it was a totally different animal. Pulled most grades in 3rd. Only the toughest grades in Colorado put me into 2nd.
With 35" tires the 4.30 ratio was reduced to 3.90. Getting back to my 4.30 ratio made all the differnce. Anyone who says that a gear change isnt worth it has no clue. The V10 loves the higher RPMs. Not being in the V10s sweat spot kills towing performance. Most people assume that the higher gears will kill gas mileage, it doesnt. Both my Excursion and F250 have 4.30s and I have managed 14.4mpg from the 250 and 16.7 out of the X. Look at the MPG polls that have been done in this forum and others, 4.30s or 3.73, V10 or 5.4L all Super Duties get about the same mileage.
even if the truck is floored it still does not pull hard it revs but picks up very slow. another thing is that even with the 3.73 and nothing in tow i am only getting 6-8.5 mpg i have only had the truck for less than a month but sometimes on fill up it will take 15 gallons of gas with only 70miles on the odometer
by the way about two weeks ago the truck needed an iac valve replaced and and the pcm reprogrammed could this affect any thing also when i was going to get the trailer on the way the truck seemed to loose some power but it runs fine on the flats with no missing on any cyl.exhaust doesn;t seem to be pluged any help
Why was the pcm reflashed??? when you replace a IAC its not needed .
fuel filter been changed ? fuel regulator?
How many miles on this vehicle?
where do you live ? what elevation?
plugs ever been changed.
Gears are going to help ,but your unloaded fuel mpgs are way down
