Trailer pulling?

My newby questions will subside soon I promise!

I am very happy to hear that Xers are pulling and not just carting kids and groceries around. Pulling campers with the X; I am expecting to be real nice.
On the Camping forums there are a few regulars there using there PSD and 34+ TT. They can't say enough about it being the perfect tow vehicle.

The advice from the Brake Controller question made me think that you guys are here as well with a wealth of knowledge.

My Tagalong is a 34 footer dry weight of 6800#. I have never been able to pull dry and my Titan is at its edge of abilities. Hence My new interest in the X!

Can I get some words of wisdom here on Pulling TT, Utilities, and the like. All the info is great.

Thanks for the help guys!

I have a 2000 6.8l V10 That I bought new in 12/99. The diesel selection was very sparce then, and I already had my boat which was way over capacity for the vehicle that I was using to tow with, so I didn't wait for a better diesel selection and I got my V10. It can pull just about anything that has a regular ball hitch on it. Besides the boat I've also got a TT very similar to yours. Mine has a slide out for the dinette and couch, and Jayco uses a doubled up frame when they do a slide (at least my vintage) so it may be a little heavier than yours. Either way, The only place I've ever slowed down on the highway was going over Mont Eagle Pass NW of Chattanooga on I-24. I've heard that is the steepest/longest Interstate grade east of the Mississippi. UI coud be wrong, but it's still pretty steep, and it makes you feel good to know you can hadle it without problems. Either way, I was still able to maintain 50+ mph al the way up in D. I normally tow my boat in OD if the hwy traffic is going 65+ mph. Less than that, the trans shifts back and forth on little hills. Due to the extra frontal area on the TT I need to be going a little faster, or I slow down and drive in D.

As you can see in my profile, I also have a box van with the 7.3l diesel (which is detuned at the factory, smaller turbo etc... due to heat build up issues in the vans smaller engine compartment) which I use to tow a 7K cargo trailer while the box is full also. It's sort of like a flying brick going down the hwy. This setup easily maintains 70+ mph on the hwy.

With the truck version of the 6.0l in an Ex, you'll have no problems towing your TT. Best of luck.

I have an 00 excursion with the v 10 also. I just bought a 32 ft TT. It pull it no problem at all. When all said and done it weighs in around 9000 lbs. I also have a 23ft wells cargo enclosed trailer, I pulled 4 full size atv's from nh to wv. Maintained 65-70 whole trip. V10 pulls like a champ.
My work truck is an 04 f350 srw with a 10'utility bed, 100 gal diesel tank, It has 166,000 miles, it pulls like theres no tomorrow. I still cant decide witch I would choose if I had to, gasser or diesel.I think you will be very happy with either way you go, Although if you decide to go the v10 route, get the 3 valve engine, More HP. Keep us posted.

I am currently towing a 6000 - 7000 pound travel trailer, weight depends on how much cargo of course. I am towing it with a 2004 6.0 Diesel 4x4 Ex with 3.73 gears.I amusing dual sway bars and a weight dist hitch. It tows behind great, on flatlands it's Overdrive all of the way as fast as you want to go, safely of course. On the small hills it stays in OD it only downshifts for the big hills, but when it does it accelerates right back up to how ever fast you want to go. I go camping a lot with 2 other families that have Excursions and trailers, they both have the V-10. On straight and level we cruise right along together but on the hills they are floored and I still pull away from them no prob....When we stop for gas/diesel I use 1 tank for their every 2 tanks, I usually get 10 to 12 towing and they get 6-7 in theirs. But to their defense we drive along around 75mph when we go camping....and we pull the hills hard! I love the truck, I had a Dodge Mega Cab Cummins and used to tow with and also towed with a Chevy Suburban 5.3 gas motor. The Sub towed horrible no power at all the Cummins did just as good as my current 6.0 Ex..........I am not wanting to get into the Gas vs. Diesel debate so all I will say is this: If you are buying an Ex for towing and you really need a lot of towing ability from my experience you will be more satisfied with the Diesel over the V-10 not because of gas mileage, the Diesel really tows better in the hills, the V-10 is adequate but the 6.0 is better. I run with those 2 V-10's at least twice a year when we camp and they cannot pull the hills like my 6.0 Ex. Enough said about that, good luck!!

I tow a 32 foot TT, weight about 9,000 - 9,400 lb. No problem with power at all.

The only problem with the Excursions is getting the "wander" under control. You will want to budget for the improvements listed in my signature. Also, if you by a 4x4 diesel, it appears the ball joints wear early. If it has more than 50K miles, budget for a new set of ball joints. Replacement of mine really made for a much more decent handling rig.
