My wife and I were at the "Largest RV show" this past weekend in Hershey PA. We would really like to get a 5th wheel and say good bye to the TT. I know some people who had bad luck with TT's like a roll over. Some guys like the TT because of the use of bed space. I was always told a 5TH wheel tows so much better then a TT. I am not sure I like the way my TT tows, maybe I need new shocks? But anyways We saw some sweet 5TH wheels that we were interested in one being the Sandpiper. Hitch weight was 2100 and dry weight was 10,800. Now is that to much for a 3/4 ton? My TT hitch is only 850 with a gross of 9600. We also like the Wildcats. They wern't near as heavy as the Sandpiper. OH and it has to have bunks.
Whats every ones thought between a TT or a 5er and the weights I mentioned and or what would be a safe hitch/pin weight and tow weight for a 3/4 ton.
I ask here because I have no means to ask anywhere else. Thanks guys
Can you pull it? Sure can. I wouldn't pull it with less than a 1-ton dually. I've pulled numerous TT's and 5'ers and the 5'ers are much better overall IMO. The difference between a TT and a 5'er is as great a difference as pulling a TT or 5'er with a dually over a SRW. A dually with a 5'er will feel like you are running on a set of rails...rock solid!
I have a TT and love it, but I also pull with a dually. Doesnt sway like everyone says and I have pulled it all over from coast to coast. I think my next move will be to a motorhome. Just skip the 5th wheel and go big. Weight wise I would think you should be ok, but I dont know for sure. My TT and truck wieghs 23k lbs.
5'vers tow more stable than TT's in my opinion. Easy to hitch up especially if you have a v-tailgate. Yes, you lose bed space, but you can find ways to get around it. I tow a small 5'ver and I never will go back to a TT.
with a 5er the hitch wieght is balanced out over all 4 corners of your truck..a TT put all the wieght right on the very end of you truck...the 5er will not feel no where near as heavy on your truck as the TT even thow it weights more..
I don't mind loosing bed space, its fire wood taritory anyways. I just don't know of going over the 1500 pound range for the hitch weight plus fire wood.
TT is at the end of the bumper...it lifts weight off of the front end and puts it on the rear...my brothers 5er weights just under 15,000LB M/T...my over loads just start to touch when i hook onto it and my truck sits level....it takes 1500LB to make the over loads touch..
thanks Cris...that 5er belongs to my brother..it does everything..when it rains the roof vents will close..when it gets hot the AC kicks on..when it gets cold the furnace kicks on...how do you call that camping lol...
We found a used Fleetwood Wilderness an 04 29BHS and dry weight is 8730 with a gross of 11450. That cann't make the hitch more the 1400 since dealer doen't know. Air bags would help also I guess.
