Well, It's been a whole week now since this problem started & I guess it's about time that I admit that I just can't find the cause of this problem on my own!
Last Friday morning I started up my truck to go to work, pulled out of my driveway & right at the first stop sign I came to, my truck died. When I tried to restart, at first it sounded like it was going to start up. But as soon as I released to key from the start position, It died again.
Since that time, I've replaced the ignition switch, the voltage regulator and the ignition module. All without any success at all. Every time I try to start my truck, the engine starts to fire up. However, as soon as the key is released back to the "on/run" position, the engine dies again. I've checked all the connections to just about everything I can think of & everything seems to be OK there too!
Since, I'm just about at my wits end with this problem. I'm really hoping that there's somebody out there who may have had a similar problem in the past who can point me in the right direction.
Any assistance that anyone can provide to assist me with fixing this problem. Would certainly be gratefully accepted and sincerely appreciated!
Many thanks to anyone who responds to this plea for assistance!
Since it tries to start and you have already replaced the DS module & ignition switch the problem would seem to be in the wiring to the module in the run position.
What Eric said. There are two sources of power to the ignition, full 12 volts in start and something like 8 volts in run. You can check the positive side of the coil for these two voltages in start and run (while cranking).
The ~8 volts is at the coil in RUN supplied thru the ballast resistor. The coil should have 8-9 volts on it during cranking. The red and white power wires at the module both get full voltage, just at different times. One (white) is powered during cranking to activate the timing retard function. The other (red) is powered when the switch is in RUN.
I agree, I could and should have been more specific within my thread title. Is there any way possible that I can do it now?
As for the previous postings that discussed similar problems. Even though I have found that there are some ideas that I'm going to try later this morning. One thing that I have noticed is that unfortunately, none of the previous postings which discussed this type of problem had any follow ups stating exactly what was done to resolve the problem. One way or another, once this problem is resolved. I'm going to make sure to post the all the information related to the resolution of this problem!
Many thanks to everyone for all the help provided,
