Looks like the 2009 F-150 is going to have a six speed.
Livonia Transmission Plant received $88 million to install flexible tooling to increase its production of a fuel-efficient, high performance 6-speed, rear-wheel drive transmission for the 2009 Ford F-150.
The new Toyota commercials are showing their new truck with the 6 speed trans. The competition is getting interesting, the front looks like they borrowed some of the Ford's details, I still like the looks of the Ford better.
Ford already has the 6spd auto trans in the Expy, which I think is a good thing. They are probably using the Expy as a trial plateform to work our all the bugs. Once refined and it shows reliability they will then throw it under the F150's and if strong enough, the SD's. Better to work out the kinks on a less popular vehicle than the F150, so you don't have a lot of issues and complaints on your best selling vehicle.
Now I do wish my 06 F150 had a 6spd vs. the antique 4spd, but I still think the F150 is the best 1/2 ton on the market.
I drove a the six speed expy for a week prior to buying my 07, I was very impressed by that transmission, however I mistakenly assumed my 07 would come with a similar trany… Well that’s the only complaint I have with my new truck, aside from some minor paint issues. I’m hoping as I get some miles on it it’ll warm up to the whole concept of shifting gears with a trace of composure. In its current state it’s borderline unacceptably clumsy. I’m sure a tuner would probably fix it so I was giddy with joy, but I’m slightly against voiding the warranty at 800 miles.
As usual ford will be the last player to market...
Can you smell what you are shoveling, or is it only me? I think you have Ford confused with ANY of the other manufacturers. How do you think they have retained the sales lead for 30 years now? Please....
As usual ford will be the last player to market with a 6 sp. in a half ton truck, for 07 they have the weakest drivetrain in a truck!!!!!!!!!!!
What do you mean "weakest"? Yes, I'm looking forward to the 6-speed transmission as well. I would love a six speed in my 2004 5.4L....
The new GMT900 Chevy/GMC trucks only have 4 speeds.
Yes I do agree though that Ford is a bit late on the six speed transmission.
Toyota 2007 Tundra = 6 speed
Dodge 2007 = 5 speed
Nissan 2007 = 5 speed
Chevy/GMC 2007 = 4 speed.
The new 2007 Expedition 5.4L 3V has a 6 speed transmission......AND the Expedition beat the Suburban in a head to head comparison test in Motor Trend recently!!!

I suspect the record will stop at 30yrs. I am hoping they will get back in the ball game in 09 with a new tranny and a more powerful engine and revised heads so a man can change the pugs with out a major act of christ and for you and spiggy I am not shoveling anything just being brutally honest and I don't like it anymore than you!!!!!!!!!!!

And Motor Trend seems to dislike Ford. I think it might be the first time they went with Ford on an updated model ver an updated model.

I wouldn't be so sure about the streak ending. After test driving all the available 1/2 trucks, the Ford still came out tops on my list. The new Chevy is nice, but still doesn't measure up in all aspects. The new Tundra looks to be a beast, but will not take over the truck segment this year. Check out my review when I was looking at purchasing a new truck. This of course is just one persons opinion, but I think it's pretty unbiased.
I have read your test drives and think you were very fair but I really think GM will push ford with this new model don't think dodge or toyo will be even close and by 09 ford should take back over with a new drivetrain, however nobody will touch toyo in the power dept. but that is where it ends I am hoping to keep my 04 going until 09???????
