wait to start light question

As mentioned before I am completely new to diesel engines. I've noticed one problem witht the truck and one problem with me.

First, the "wait to start" light has not come on a couple of times. Once was in the morning after the truck sat all night. I gave it a 10 second count, and it fired up with no problems. In fact, this this starts quicker than my gas Chev P/U. Should I be worried if the light isn't coming on, but the truck is starting good and strong?

Second is the me problem. I'm so used to gas that I just hop in and turn the key. Of my first week of ownership, I've probably done this 5 times. Am I hurting anything by doing this. On each of these occasions the truck has always just fired up immediately, no extended crank issues.

Thanks for your help.

nah, I dont think you're hurting it at all because its just the gp's turning off and on. In fact, when my light comes on, I wait about 3 seconds and turn the key because its heating the chamber and it always fires up instantly just like you do it.

Check the connection from the firewall to the GP controller pink/black wire with a wierd connector. The WTS obtains it's power from the ignition and the ground when required from the GP controller........

I'll give the connection a look when I get it back from the body shop.

They are sanding down the hood (rusted and peeling when I bought it) painting the hood and the cowl piece and detailing the exterior to get all the oxidation off the truck. The thing looked horrible when it went in, well see what its like tomorrow when I pick it up.

It could be as simple as a bulb gone out if controler is working. Do you hear clicking noise? If you do after a few seconds then it is working.

Like I said, it has only happened a couple of times, so my doubts are that it is a bulb. I'll have to listen for the sound.

The truck has been delayed because of the snow. 1 of 4 painters showed up for work today, that means monday before I get the truck back.

If the black ground wire is not getting s good connection, the controller may act wierd and there may be no ground for the black pink wire either.

You are looking at the WTS connection and the ground connection on your controller.

Where is the controller located. In the cab or in the engine compartment?

It is locateed right behind the air cleaner under a black plastic cover. BE CAREFULL there is 12V power right from the battery under the plastic cover (see Daves pic).

My wait to start light comes on just fine, but then flashes once before it goes out, somewhere it seems I read that when one of the glowplugs was bad that the light flashes or something like that. When I bought the truck, it came with 4 bad glowplugs, and I remember the wait to start light didn't just come right on and go out.
Is there some kind of indication of bad glow plugs via the wait to start light or is this all in my head?

if i remember right someone said when you have one or more bad glow plugs the wait to start light will come on and go right out or not stay on for the normal 10 - 12 seconds like if all the glow plugs were working even if the motor is cold sometimes it might not come on at all

I had some odd things happen with my controller at one point and it acted so much like a ground problem. Checked rechecked replaced every ground strap put new ends on the battery grounds on battery and engine side. Turn the key and hmmm lovely the solenoid would stutter like a bad ground. The controller is new and so are the glow plugs all connections cleaned and recleaned and protected. So after a paragraph of cuss words I took the positive supply wires off and checked them. The shrink covered ends looked nice but ended up being almost completely disconnected and corroded. So not enough power was getting through but ran everything else ok until the the extra draw from the plugs. So now I have ALL new wires and a lot smarter. OK maybe not so much smarter. LOL

The time the WTS light stays on is dependent on internal cylinder temp. So if you start it in the morning and it is 10 deg F. it will stay on probably 7-10 seconds. If it was 80 deg it will stay on for a couple of seconds. If the cylinder is hot from just being ran it will be on for a very short time.

The controler problem: Also check the black ground wire. My controler was giving me fits and everything checked out OK. Just on the off chance I ran an additional ground from the battery to the black wire on the controler. haven't had a problem in 5 years now.
