My stupid ABS acts up every so often, not stopping when it should etc. and I'm guessing the sensors are dirty. Can anyone explain to me how to get them out of the front hub, and should they be cleaned or replaced (157k miles)??
The front ABS sensors are mounted to a sealed hub bearing assembly. If the sensors are acting up because of debris, it means that your bearings are shot and need to be replaced. You can't service the bearings. Instead you have to purchase the entire hub which comes with the new bearings and ABS sensor.
JEEZ, not the answer I was looking for- as this is my first 4x4, is there anything I can do to inspect for a possible bearing failure? It's been happening on and off for about 14,000 miles, maybe a couple of days every month.
Jack up the front end, grab the tire, and try to wobble it back and forth. There should be no movement or end play, and it should spin freely.
Don't feel bad, I also learned the hard way. ABS light.... ask the same question.... let the shock of the price sink in (~$350 btw for one)... bit the bullet and got it done.
If I nee them, I saw on ebay a company selling them for $250 a piece. Thing is, I don't like changing only one. This is my first 4x4, but I've done my own maint for 12 years now, so I guess it isn't that hard to change?
The sensor can be taken out of the hub assembly, with either a star or allen wrench. the only thing is its behind the brake disk shield. You might be able to bend the tang which is over the sensor to access the bolt. I had to replace the hub/bearing unit on my '99 4x4 f-350 dually. Be careful if you buy a replacement hub unit. I noticed that there were notes, on some sites about the hub unit being specific to srw not drw. Don't know what the difference is. I did take my sensor out of the old unit, and it had a dust like debris on the end. My unit was shot, and a new unit comes with the complete wiring, which plugs in behind the wheel well insert. check this plug first. maybe use some electrical grease to keep out moisture. Hopefully this is all it is in your case. My total rebuild on one side only was $600 doing it myself.
