New guy fuel problems,etc
I had my 86 F-250 to the dealer for a diagnostic and he came back with a grocery list of items that need help.
1. Injection pump. I'm was looking to do replace this myself, but after looking at the Haynes manual with the required Ford tools I'm wondering if I would be over my head. Are all the tools (T83T-9000-C, T86T- 9000-C, Ford protective cap set T83T-9395- A) completely necessary or can it be done with run of the mill tools?
2. New O rings on fuel lines. Tool required, I assume?
3. My #7 glow plug is bad. The dealer said to buy a GM glow plug because it is a 12v vs. the 6 volt that Ford uses. Any thoughts on this one?
4. What is a lift pump? Apparently, I need a new one and the parts stores have no idea what I am talking about. Maybe I should have asked the dealer rather than just nodded my head, huh?!
5.What about timing after the IP is installed? Too difficult or can be done by a guy who can follow directions(i.e. me)?
So, as you can see from this I'm pretty new to the diesel world. I really want to work on this truck myself as much as possible, but obviously don't want to make things worse. Let me hear your words of wisdom. Please be nice. Thanks in advance.

2. O-rings, a little oil for lube and a small screw driver or pick no problems
3. replace all 8 GP's with Motorcraft/Beru made in Germany only. bad ones will shortly take out the rest.
4. The engine driven low pressure fuel pump mounted on the pass side front draws fuel from tanks to fuel filter.
5. Scribe marks on housing and pump for intial timing, more detailed posts available here if you decide to go there!
DO NOT follow the Haynes manual about removing the IP gear cover / gear/ pump as an assembly, re timing a gear tooth off sucks big time and then some. Again if your going to go there, PM me, I will send you a link to a good artical re changing IP.
remove all the fuel lines from injectors, remove electrical lines after marking them, remove the oil fill or the little cover on the front of the crive cover, inside there are 3 5/16, 12 pt bolts holding the pump to the drive gear. carefully remove them, remove the 3 nuts holding the pump to the cover --- the whole thing comes off like a large butterfly. You will see a small notch in the pump drive, that fits back into the drive gear on reassembly.
If you're not sure, do a search for the forum in here and ask questions.
The only thing that disappoints me is the somewhat reliable manuals you can buy. I've run into the same thing with my other trucks manual. Some things the manual is spot on and others it has you doing way more than is necessary to take care of the job. Luckily, forums cut throught the clutter. Thanks again everyone.
