hey all, i just ordered a new weiand manifold and a holly carb combo for my 78' 400. when i took apart the old manifold it had a valley pan under it...it seems to be in good shape. do i still use the vally pan with my new manifold i just bought? the package deal came with new manifold gaskets, or do i just use the new gaskets?
The purpose of the valley pan is to keep oil from splashing from the lifter valley onto the HOT exhaust crossover underneath the manifld and coking on the manifold.
Some aftermarket heads and manifolds, do not have a exhaust crossover passage and do not need the valley pan. If you have the passage, you can block it off and not use a valley pan. If you use the valley pan you do not use the gaskets and vice versa.
The purpose of the crossover is to warm up the carb quickly in cold weather to improve fuel mileage.
You shouldn't reuse the valley pan, as it seals the manifold.
Some manifolds use a valley pan to keep the intake charge cooler without hot oil splashing on it. Of course if the manifold has an exhaust crossover that function is lost.
