I just found a 1974 F250 4x4 for sale-$1500. This is the problem-It was once stolen then recovered by the Ca. highway patrol and given a new vin and registered as a 1974. The truck has square headlights,400,C6,married np205,D44hp,D60,tilt,true power steering, power disc brakes, and rear&saddle tanks. The badges say its a Ranger XLT.The body is decent and DMV confirms its a 1974.Should I buy it?
That is totally up to you. If the truck runs and drives good, why not. Only issue I could see even coming up would be insuring it. It might be hard to sell it again but if it's what you want and you think it's worth the $1500, go for it.

What you are describing is a 1978-79 truck, with the square lamps, and 400 engine etc. It's possible to change a grille from a '74 to a 78-79, but if it's a real 1974, than the engine's been swapped too.
Definately doesn't sound like a true 74. If it is, not only has the grill and motor been swapped, but the tranny, transfer case and front axle too. 74's have divorced transfer cases, low pinion drum brake Dana 44's, power assist steering, no tilt wheel ect...... It is possible that all of these have been swapped.
it sounds like whoever had the truck changed just about everything possible on it to at least a 77 or newer running gear.body sounds like a post 77 1/2 box with fuel tank doors, and if it has "RECTANGULAR" headlights its a 78-79 grille.its possible they were making a totally new truck at a chop shop.if the truck was a 74 originally it should have the narrower "high boy" type frame. -my guess is if the California H.P.have issued a new vin # as a 74,and the DMV confirm it,i cant see a problem with insuring the truck.check the truck out for mechanical problems, body work,if you like what you see go for it. -billy
DMV and the
Failing that, they may just guess what year the truck is, if all the VIN numbers have been destroyed. "Well what year does it look like to you, Beth?" etc...
It sounds like the truck was pieced together from several trucks. It would be very helpful if you could find a factory vin on the truck somewhere. Preferably on the frame if at all possible.
If at all else fails, remember the Johnny Cash Song, "One Piece at a Time"...
