57 info?

I have the opportunity to buy a 57 swb truck for under $1000. The problem is I was born and raised on Chevy products (don't hold that against me) and don't know much about Fords. I haven't had much luck finding info specifically about the 57-60 trucks online. Does anyone know of any web sites where I can find pics, technical info, etc for these trucks? Also, does anyone know if this may a decent deal on this truck? Here is what I know. It is a 57 short bed, V8(292 I think), 3 speed, and the body "needs a little work". The truck is supposed to be mostly original. I saw it once in the dark, but I plan to go back and look closer. It appeared to be missing the tailgate and front bumper. What kind of things should I look for? Thanks in advance for any help.

Hello, and welcome to the world of Ford Trucks. 1957 was the very first year that Ford changed over from the "fat fender" styled cab to the smooth side or "Styleside" pickup (although the flareside bed was still available on these). There are pictures here on the picture gallery, and there are books that cover this truck available on this website's online store. Another good book is "Ford Pickups 1957-67 by Paul G. McLaughlin". If your V8 is original, it would be a 272. The price of the truck would really depend on what condition it is in. Some things you can check for......
Is the cab solid? ie floor, step wells, seperation of cab at rear cab corners, cab mounts.
Does the truck run?
Is everything there, and does it look to be original?
Check for body rot at the rear bottom of front fenders, door bottoms, cab corners and radiator support.
Check the bed floor to see if it is solid. I would say that if it is a nice solid (no major rot), mostly original, running truck, it would definately be worth it. There are several reproduction companies who carry replacement parts for these trucks. Do you know if it is a Custom Cab? I hope I was of some help to you. Good luck!
Kenny
