Hi again
ok, here's the run down.
we bought, from a private owner, a 2000 f250 7.3 psd. 28,000 miles. It has a fuel transfer system and holds about 89 gallon of fuel total. We thought - AWSOME DEAL $20,000, scooped it up!
The man that owned the truck passed away and his son sold it to us. We are thinking he didn't drive it much, around town and an occasional 5th wheel hook up get away so after he died the truck sat for a LONG time.
We have filled both tanks 1 time and are just about empty and my husband is NOT happy with the mpg's he's seeing. We haven't filled her up again yet but so far we are about roughly 1000 miles.
We have pulled the boat a few times, varies between the 17'aluminum to the lake and the 22 ' alum w/cabin to the ocean, an occasional hiway trip w/out pulling, and minimal "here and there' trips.
Is she STILL in a break in period our is there something just not right?
We have been looking for a diesel for the soul purpose of the towing capability and that it will most likely be the last truck we will ever have to purchase but he's thinking we screwed ourselves.
any thoughts?
Our previouse truck was a 98 f150, not the best mileage but NEVER any problems. GREAT TRUCK
One more thing. When not pulling on the weekends I will be the main driver of the truck on weekdays going about 10 miles round trip to work which I know is not a good thing for diesels. but for now I have still been driving the f150(haven't put it up for sale yet just incase...)
HELP
Wait until you fill up to see what the actual mileage is. Also it's best to track mileage over several tankfulls to see what you are averaging. Always calculate mileage by hand. If your truck is equipped with an overhead mileage display, just simply ignore it. Most of the time it's not accurate. When you fill up, always fill to the very top every time with fuel and not foam.
At 28K she is no where near broken in. After a few fillups to determine actuall mileage come down to the 99-03 forum. theres lots to be done to improve. I average about 15.5 over the last 6 months.
First tank calculated 15-17 mpg. I started getting about 19-20 mpg after 55,000 and a little better after 100,000. Presently has 177,000 on it and going strong.
