Just bought a used 2001 F350 7.3 PSD and am having problems with the steering. When I am setting still and try to steer it to manuver into a parking spot the steering not only turns heavy but totally locks up. Took it back to the place I bought it from and they tested it and said its nothing out of the ordinary for that type of truck. They said you cannot turn them when you are setting still. My concern is that there is no weight on this truck yet. It is an XLT with a 6.5' box. I intended to pull a fifth wheel camper with it and if you can't turn empty it could be a bearcat in tight places with some weight on it. They filled the tires to max pressure (75-80psi) and said thats all they can do. Like to have some input. thanks jssnodak
You're kidding, right? They actually told you that Ford designed, built and sold a truck that couldn't have it's wheels turned when stopped?
No, that is not normal.
Your truck may be low on power steering fluid, may need a new power steering pump, may need a new steering gearbox or may need new power steering hoses.
I can't believe no one has a solution for this problem. It appears to big enough that some one should have found a fix for it. I would sure like to know.
You should jack the front up and turn the wheel to see if it turns hard off the ground. Could be ball joints locked up or steering gear etc. Check front U joints at all angles for steering issues.
anyone find a fix for this? I am searching for it because I have the exact same problem. Cant turn AT ALL without rolling. Something has got to be worn out, but I cant start swapping out parts until I get it narrowed down a bit.
It sounds like you are turning the wheels while stopped and your foot on the brake. It is not uncommon for the modern disc brakes and wide tires for the system pressure to bypass because the brakes lock the wheels, which must be able to rotate during this manuver. When you release the brakes does it operate satisfactorly?
I can let off the brakes, but if I have a trailer on and it wont "roll" without hitting the gas... the steering is locked. Only once the wheels turn can I start turning the steering. When backing up a trailer, I need every inch... if the wheels are pointed the wrong way, I have to roll a few more inches the wrong way before I can get it turned back the right way. Doesnt work out well.
I am doing a bunch of searches and I see lots of people have this problem (and some trucks work fine )... some people are putting up with it, some just say "try changing the fluid, pump, box, $, etc". No real fix yet?
From what I have found out it is the hydroboast. They can be rebuilt and ported to help with the problem. Talk to some one at AGR Performance they can give you the details. I have got other problems right now, I have got a steering box on order from them.www.agrsteering.com
