well i was driving along the other day, and came to a stop light. went to go make a hard left turn, and halfway through the turn, the wheel locked, almost sending me into the front end of a fast moving dodge. luckily i stopped in time. managed to force the wheel into submission to get it to the gas station up the road. when the wheel straightens out, something grabs it and holds it in place and keeps it from moving unless you use 2 hands. you can also hear something click directly behind the steering wheel. when you turn the wheel slightly so its not locked, the wheel wobbles up and down side to side, like its loose. (i have a video if anyone dosent understand.) so is this a simple fix, or am i ****ed?
It looks and sounds to me like perhaps the nut that holds the wheel to the top of the column may have backed off, causing the looseness. Under the wheel there is (or was in days gone by) a wheel about 4" in dia. that the steering wheel lock engages into. If the nut holding the wheel in place is loose or has backed off the locking wheel (?) may be getting engaged by the key lock causing the problem. Other than the driving aspect it will probably easy to locate the problem by removing the wheel.
ill have to take a picture, but there was one torx head bolt that hold the wheel onto the shaft. and the entire shaft wobbles. im gonna go buy a wheel puller today and see whats up.
