2.8 problems

hi, i just got an 85 ranger off my dad. it has a 2.8 5 spd and it seems to have good power. the heads are clacking quite a bit and was going to try adjusting the valves but my oil is also foaming? up quite a bit on the dipstick. it's not losing any antifreeze and i haven't had time to do a compression test yet but it really does seem to have good power, think i might have to do the headgaskets? the plugs all looked good just really old. the valve covers are leaking really bad when i come to a stop sometimes it reeks of burning oil on the manifolds, i guess hehe. i also have a good 71 302 and c4 outta a 71 meteor i was thinkin on swapping into it if it would be easy, just don't want to get into odd wiring and relocating things and headaches lol. the truck has about 180,000 kms. thanks alot.

Well a new set of valve cover gaskets should resolve your oil burning LOL!

Get the valve lash within spec and the clacking will most likely go away. If it's loose enough that it's making that much noise it could possibly be damaging to parts so get it taken care of.

As for the oil foaming, I recommend changing the oil and trying again. If it was a motor that wasn't driven often then that could cause some milkey goo in the dipstick tube. Or, if ol' dad overfilled it, that can cause foaming. Anyway, a change should have it fixed.

That and a set of plugs, and I think you'll be ready to go!

cool thanks, i had changed the oil and before that put in some kind of engine cleaner i got from ford but it still seems to foam up. he had it for a couple months and jsut drove it to the beer store which is where it sat for a year or so before he got it lol. i try not to drive it much cuz of the clacking, i'm just rearranging and shelving the crap in the garage so i have a good work area, the truck needs quite a bit of body work. i guess i should get everything going before i even think about the 302 hehe. thanks again.

Hi and Welcome to FTE! Please take a moment to check out the Guidelines as they contain important info that you'll need when posting on the site:

https://www.ford-trucks.com/guidelines.html

When you do get around to considering that swap let me know. A carburated swap is much easier than EFI as far as the wiring and many little details go and there are kits available with headers and mounts although there are mounts that you can fabricate yourself pretty easily. This is a common swap and there's a ton of info available about it. I can give you some links if you like or simply Google "Ranger V8 Swap" and see all that comes up.

However, once you get that 2.8 running good it may be all that you need.

cool thanks i never thought of the google. always think to myself why didn't the guy google it instead of bugging lol. i am surprised at how peppy the 2.8's are. although after driving my 68 stang, cuz of the nice weather, i do like the 8 haha. but i'll go the easiest and cheapest route, but i will check out google. thanks again

I usually prefer to give a person a more personal answer than to simply tell to go search for it, but in this case there's so much info out there about this swap and how much work is involved, so I thought I'd throw that out there for you and then give you an invite to drop back by if you have any questions...or just to yak about it.

There are also a few books available about it online, one of which is pretty well-written and detailed. It can be found here:
