Cool Broken Front Pinion

Well I broke the front pinion. I did not know that was possible. I went snowmobiling and when I got back to the truck I got lazy (and cold) and just left my big bulky boots on and drove the 25 miles home from Conconully. No problems.....until I got to the front of my garage.....I stepped on the brake and accelerator at the same time. PANIC MODE KICKS IN and I mash both the brake and accelerator to the floor. POW. I'm thinking no biggie. I broke a u joint, but to my surprise and horror I found an intact driveline and u-joint and only a stub of a pinion attached. crud. I've installed ring and pinion in differentials before, but not on one of these. Is this a DYI job? What brand and where to buy? Any experience is greatly appreciated and welcome.

I wouldn't call changing a pinion out a Do It Yourself Project. Changing this out requires pressing of a bearing, shimming, and measuring backlash. I have tried it before only to find myself towing my rig to the service station 500 miles later because my spider gears blew out the inspection plate. Most cases you have to replace both pinion and ring because these items are matched and wear in together. The backlash requires dial indicators to be used to ensure proper setting.

My buddy just last week broke his front pinion while plowing snow in his 2000 F-350. He took it to the Dealership to find out his entire housing was damged from when the broken parts inside exploded.

Ring and pinions are a matched set, you must use them together. If you have done them before then you should be able to do this one as well, as long as you know how to measure and adjust the backlash, preload, and the wear pattern.

Thanks guys. I think I can take on the job. I realize that they must be replaced as a set, I should have clarified that I need to replace both ring and pinion. Is there anything that I need to look out for? I'll probably just go with a master set from Randy's in Everett, WA. I've installed a few of their kits before and they have a GREAT customer service and tech department. I'm sure I'll make use of it!
