good day folks, I have a 1997 (OB) F250 H/D 4x4 xcab powerstroke with A LOT of miles
I was checking out my truck to get ready to go on a road trip and I found a loose rear pinion, it was seeping a little oil but not bad for as loose as the pinion was.
I pulled the rear U-joint and it didn't look as if the pinion nut had backed off but it was real loose. I had noticed that the rear had started singing a little on acceleration and at highway speeds and clunking at stop and go.
I tightened the pinion nut and it went up about 1/4" before I was able to get any preload, it's still singing but not as bad.
What do you think I need?
Bearings, seal, and new crush sleeve? or is the rear shot?
It almost sounds like the pinion bearing is bad. I would say pull the diff cover off and take a look at the R&P to see if there is any noticable wear patterns. You MAY be able to get away with a new pinion bearing, crush sleeve, and seal and it will be good. IF ther has not been any adverse wear on the R&P.?? I'm no mechanic but I can tear ANYTHING down and sometimes get it back together and working!!

i also agree, i would look at the ring and pinnion for wear due to the loose pinion, at this point especially with high mileage probably due for an overhaul, you will have to disassemble it for pinion bearings anyhow.
a couple ways to loose pinion preload is bearing wear, and spinning the tires on ice or sand then the tires hook solidly can push the pinion into the ring gear, at the same time crushing the crush sleeve just enough to loose preload.
