Need FE casting number expert
Unless you measure the bores, you will not know what the block is.
End of story. Anything else is a fantasy.
No one has mentioned it yet, but 428's have an "A" or "C" sandscratch on the back of the block.
Case in point. I bought a virgin 66 mercury 428. Untouched from air cleaner to oil pan. It has C6AE-U heads. Correct date codes, etc.
And, I measured the chambers when I rebuilt the engine. Every single combustion chamber was in the 72 cc to 75 cc range.
Hence, you cannot really rely on the books.
The Ford Motor Company in house O. S. I. (Obsolete Supercede Interchange) book is not sold to the public. It's an in-house book Ford publishes for dealer parts departments.
This book updates part numbers, tells if a part number is obsolete, and will give the user the true part number from a casting number.
In any case, its all just speculation until you measure the block.
To assume that your block is a 428 because two buddies have c6Ae-u heads on their 428's is just wishful thinking.
C6AE-U heads were the standard FE passenger car head in 1966. They were used on 352's, 390's, and 428's.
Racemaster33, if you decide to sell the block and/or heads, you need to have the facts right to be able to responsibly represent what you have, or at least tell people you don't know.
I may be violating a forum rule here, but you may also want to refer to the fordfe.com website. It has lots of folks who are absolutely the most knowledgeable FE experts in the world. I suggest you post a question about your mystery block on that site.
The reason I came to the conclusion is because I've been working with a guy from the FE websight everybody talks about. Basically, he came to that conclusion.
Next week it will checked for cracks and bore checked and I'll share it with everybody. I doesn't matter to me if it's a 352 or 428 because I'm not going to use it myself. I just want to be able to tell the buyer exactly what it is and how I came to that conclusion.
Thanks
