I am trying to find out some info on an 1978 E series van. I cannot determine if this truck is an E-150, 250, or 350. I am also trying to determine the engine type, and size. The owner of said van has no idea and I can find no such info anywhere else on outside of van.
Thank you all for the help.
Look at the wheels, if it's a 5 lug pattern then it's either an E100 or E150, if it's an 8 lug pattern then it's an E250 or E350. To tell what engine you have open the hood. Look on the core support (above the radiator) for an emissions/vacuum label. It will give engine size on that. If it's not on the core support look on the driver's side valve cover.
There should be a plate on the upper right cowl top panel, under the hood. The first three digits should read either Exx or Fxx with "xx' being a 15,25,or 35. An E35, then, would be an E-350. But if for some reason the plate is missing or painted over, these should help:
The only engines available for the '78s were the 300-6cyl, 351-2bbl V8, and 460-4bbl V8. The differences are huge, so it should be obvious with a quick peek in the doghouse.
All of The 78s have a rubber bumper directly above the center of the leaf-springs in the rear. but the E150s are bolted directly through bottom of the framerail, whereas the 250s and 350s have the rubber bumper fused to an L-bracket that bolts thru the SIDE of the framerail.
