i pulled the IAC valve on my brother's explorer: cleaned it, and popped it back on w/out any issues ('cept now the car actually holds an idle w/out stalling).
1. disconnect negative cable (mine was 5/16" socket)
2. remove black plactic cover above carburator (10 mm)
3. unplug the 2-wire clip and lay wires aside
4. remove idle air control valve (shiny silver and cylindrical + some plactic)
this will all be just one part (8 mm)
5. remove old gasket
6. install new gasket (I did not use any type of gasket cement)
7. install new idle air control valve (O'Reilly Auto Parts, Borg-Warner $73.43)
make sure to get and install a new gasket
8. re-connect wire plug
9. re-install shroud
10. reconnect negative battery cable
11. start engine, DO NOT TOUCH ACCELERATOR, let run for 15 minutes so
the computer can learn and integrate parameters of this new part
12. with the proper tools, 30 minutes later and you are done!
13. you just saved $100 - $150
