390 Carb Help

Any suggestions for replacing a balky 2 barrel on my 65 4x4 390 ? I'm considering a new carb and manifold. A HP boost would great, but mainly looking for quality/reliability. Is there a recommended package ?
thanks

I am in the process of doing this also. I am using the 650 Thunder series from Edel.

I'm looking at the Edelbrock Performer 390 (part number #2105) intake with a Performer Series 750 cfm carb (part number #1407) for my 352. Both can be had on eBay for around $500 total.

Chad, The 750 is a little more carb than the FE can use, 600 CFM or less can actually run better without dumping as much gas out of the tailpipe.

Ozzie, Unlike 1949f1 I really didn't notice much difference changing the intake and carb. Replacing a real ratty carb could show some improvement.

When I rebuilt my engine, I put the Edelbrock Performer intake and 1406 600cfm carb on it, but still thought it used too much gas. I have run a 390 cfm Holley 4 barrel that seemed to perform about as good as the Edel. and the mpgs went up. I have run a Holley 600 GT on it for a bit and did see a huge difference, but I couldn't stay out of it because I loved the sound and feel too good, and took it off.

There are a lot of guys running large carbs that will tell you they do a wonderful job, and if you bend over and sniff near the tail pipe you can smell the raw gas that is being dumped out on the road because the engine can't burn it. The pipe is generally sooty black too. IMHO
