transmission wear is just thea "transmission". the junk falls to the bottom of the pan, the only way it gets out is to go thru the suction filter, then the pump, valve body---- then to the radiator and converter. dont filter it at the end, filter it before it gets into the valves. better off to clean the pan, change the filter and wipe off the magnet.

well, since i never tow or anything too strenuous, I've just followed the FMC recomendations and get the tranny flushed (all the fluid comes out that way, not just sucking the pan) every 30k....and plan on the pan drop and filter change at 120k miles....and at that point, i'm sure i'll stick with MC Mercon V.

At 125000 I pulled the pan, installed new 1-2 and 2-3 accumulators, high line pressure valve and a shift kit. At the same time I welded on a 1/2 pipe coupler to the bottom of the pan sump for a drain. I installed a remote spin-on filter also because I had pulled the pan at 115000 to put in a new filter and then at 125k the amount of crap in the pan was enough to convince me of the validity of an actual and easily changed filter. I would not say that the pan shouldn't be pulled to change the internal filter and clean the pan but the extra filtration has to be good for longevity. By the way, the shift kit was a fantastic modification. No more of the slushy feel.
Also, the factory intake can be modified to allow for an open filter by cutting the housing around the filter to expose it. This has improved throttle response and top end. All for about $.10 in were on a sawzall blade. I haven't expeirenced any detrimental effects from doing this.
