I can see that this is a really great forum. Thanks for all the help and advice. I live in the middle of nowhere mid-way between Houston and Austin so it is a road trip for me to get to Advance Auto, but that seems to be the concensus recommendation. I'll be back with codes. Happy New Year all...
cheap is worth less. just check out what it can read before buying. meaning if it can't read every thing else save your cash till you can get a good one. another is look into some of the items that can adapt your laptop in to a scanner leting you read engine ,trans, abs and air bag plus much more.
Well, I got a scanner (rented at O'Reilly for free) and found out how inept I am. I searched everywhere and could not find the OBD port. I checked with both Ford and Fleetwood and neither could tell me where to look. So I went back to the old "take a look under the hood" technique I grew up with and found my air breather was soaking wet. Water was dripping out of it. I called my local Ford dealer and got no joy so I called Ford and discovered there is a mod to the location of my air breather. No recall so I will have to pay for the mod kit. Doesn't quite seem like my idea of customer service but I will fix it and file this under lessons learned. Replacing the air filter didn't turn off the service engine light but it sure perked the motor up. Amazing what a little air will do for combustion. Thanks for all the replies and advice.

I don't know what your options are at this point, but that water-in-the-air-box was a KNOWN ISSUE and they WERE altered under warranty.
Might be worth a call to Ford, or ask the dealer to speak to the Ford service rep next time he/she is in town.
Thanks, I'll look again so I know where to find it in the future. Ford pretty much left me high and dry since it was not modified under warranty I will have to buy the mod kit. Just got back from the dealer and it 2 parts (a plastic tube and a new clamp) for a total cost of $75. Got no choice but to fix it but I will do it myself ( I think I can handle this one). Got a copy of the TSB and it gives very clear instructions. Thanks again for all the help...
coming back from a 4 day camping trip in the desert, my service engine soon light came on also. 2001 Holiday Rambler 35 foot motorhome with V10. Motor has just over 80k on it. Ran fine but the light is on. I was trying to find the OBD port yesterday so I could hook up my scanner and see what codes were indicated, but I never found the port. I'll look better tonite. It was raining on the way home so possibly my air filter got wet. I also read in the Ford Class A chassis manual, that if the gas cap is not tightened correctly, the service light will come on. I'll let you know what I find.
Not sure about the F53 chassis (if that's what it is), but the PCM is usually in the driver's side kick-panel, so anywhere under the dash on the driver's side.
The Superduty has it right near the driver's right foot...
I had trouble finding mine, too. It is located on the steering column, footfeet side. I bought the kit and modified my air intake system but, alas, too late. $561 later I now have a new mass air flow sensor and oxygen sensor. I am not real happy with Ford for not fixing this problem on all V-10s. If you are not the original owner and the original owner didn't get it fixed during the warranty period you are out of luck. Good luck - hope you didn't ingest water because it could have done damage other than just the air filter.
ok, my codes are P0171 and P0174, lean condition on both sides of the motor!! I did a visual just now, all the vacuum lines look good and tight, no cracks. The air filter is dry. My service manual CD for the 2001 F53 class chassis says it could be a couple handfuls of reasons why those codes are present. Low fuel pressure, leaking regulator, PCV, vacuum lines, blah blah. I also checked my fuel cap just because and it can only be tightened so far, so I guess I rule that out. My PCV is the same one when we bought the RV I will change that out first. Changed it out on my F350 already. So, has anyone had experience getting rid of the P0171/P0174 codes? I cleared the codes but did not disconnect the battery and reset the PCM yet.
Leans means just that - too much air is getting in.
Clean the MAF first - if it's dirty, it can't tell how much air is getting into the motor causing it to run lean.
If you know there are no vacuum leaks, and everything else is OK, check the fuel pressure.
And when I say check it, I don't mean just at idle. I mean under load. Also, check if the regulator is doing it's job by watching the fuel pressure at idle. Disconnect the vacuum line to the regulator, and the pressure should increase.
