I have a fine running 1999 2V V10 with 139K miles on my F250, power seems fine, love it and my truck. However just read that the 3V V10 has 360hp, is that in a special application? I thought the 3V in 2005 went up to 305hp.
I can resist the temptation to make a move to a newer '05 3V for 30hp gain, but if there is a 90hp gain.......
I must have read it wrong.
Can anyone explain this? Is it a special application?
in 2005 when ford switched to the 3v motors in the super duty trucks, the 5.4 was listed at a 300hp/365ftlbs while the 6.8 v10 made the jump to 355/455. the hp for a 2v v10 is close to what a 3v 5.4 will have. just remember, these ratings are at the flywheel, not the rear wheels
In a joyous way this isn't helping me calm down. My 99 2v is also pre PI heads so I'm at 275hp. The jump up to 355-362 and the raised torque should make quite a big difference. Sounds like I should be watching out for a good '05 for a possible trade up. I did a search on autotrader and found only a few for sale. Must be more in demand, maybe due to the problems with the 6.0.
Can anyone describe the difference in driving or towing between the two V10s, ie, the difference of an additional 80-90 hp? It must be huge!
If you have the chance to get a 3-valve JUMP ON IT.
It's not only about the power from the engine. It's also about the 5-speed Torqshift transmission. And the bigger brakes. Both of those will make your '99 feel like turd. Of course, the 2005+ trucks are also a bit heavier. Remember, rear gearing plays into it too, so remember if you're going to be hauling, a 4.30 or maybe a 4.10 gear is helpful.
For real-world experience with the V10, visit the V10 forum and ask for opinions there. Many V10ers do not regularly visit the SD forum, and there are quite a few who have owned two or more of the three variations. The non-PI pre-2000, the PI-head 2000-2004 and the 3-valve in 2005-up.

I have a 06 3v with 4.10s and 33" tires love the 5 speed torque shift and the engine wow mash the skinny peddle and hang on, I do have to say that I don't love the throttle by wire but don't hate it as much as GM's.
Dad has a 00 2v with 3.73s 32" tires very good power but big jumps between gears still a beast though.
Whew! What in the world did I get myself into this time? Two days ago I thought I had one of the best trucks on the road. Now that I know about the '05 and 06', the equivalent of supercharged 99 V10 with even a little boost of nitrous......... I will not sleep until I can wake up from this dream and find an '05 sitting in my yard!
I wonder if the newer V10s are going to be hard to find because of the poor rep of the 6.0s. There doesn't seem to be too many on the market.
My '99 will be on the market the first of the week.
Thanks for all of your replies and thanks for this forum. I have confidence to own the Superduty without worrying about the unknown. When I get to the unknown, someone here will explain it.
i know i love mine it cant evan compare to my 2000 f250 with the 5.4 i tow with mine no searching for gears just cruise down the road and go right up the hill.
I just went from an '02 to an '05 What a difference! you can find the '05 and newer ones out there, you just have to be patient and keep looking. They aren't willing to deal on them here in Cleveland, i had to go to Pa. to get mine. They aren't comming down in price either, considering the price of gas! HAPPY HUNTING!
