I want to buy an aftermarket rear diff cover, but I don't know what type of axle my truck has -- how do I figure it out?
My truck is a 1992 F350 crewcab, dually, 7.5L(460cid), E4OD, rear-wheel-drive (not 4x4).
I'm guessing the VIN might tell me, but I need some sort of cross reference or some sort of deciphering manual to tell what the numbers in the VIN code mean, don't I?
From looking at pictures, and other info, I'm guessing it might be a Dana 60 or a Ford 10.25. I might be way off. I don't know anything about these axles.
LorenR -- Thanks for the reply. I guess my guesses were closer than I thought. Is there a way to be totally certain of the axle type? Or ar you totally certain? I just don't want to order the part, then find out after I've removed the cover and drained the diff that it's the wrong part -- then have to ship the part back and wait for a new one (you probably get the idea).
Thanks. I counted the bolts on the diff cover -- there are 12. So, apparently my axle is a Sterling 10.25.
I also looked at the door sticker and the axle code is: "D5" I don't know if this has anything to do with the type of axle or just the ratio. I'm assuming the ratio is 4.10. There is a small metal tag on one of the diff cover bolts and I'm assuming this is just some sort of serial number.
Also, what does "sterling" mean? Is this a manufacturer, or what? I've heard the term used with "Ford" as in, "Ford Sterling." Is Sterling a division of Ford? Just curious. Thanks again.
