1988 F150 engine problem.

hi all, well, first of all i'd like to say hi to all. i'm new to this forum.
now, for my question. i have a 1988 ford f150 stright 6. i have notice that it has a slight flat spot just off idle and that makes it hard to take off smooth. then it, i think has a hesatation like 1/4 throttle and beyond. if i punch it after i'm rolling its hesatating and if i let go slowly of the gas it seems to like pick up speed. don't make sence. then, after it warms up. if i'm on 4th gear
( manual tranny ) and like let off on the gas just enough to cruise i seem to hear some tapping going on. but when its cold i don't hear that. well. you all probly ganna say. wow. lots of trouble. but besides that it runs ok i guess.lol. it has 17700 mile on it. and its EFI fuel system. if any help, thanks. and thanks if not.

Have you put any injector cleaner in your gas tank or seafoam through the vaccum line? Umm That Engine Restore is good stuff for the cylinder walls and oil system. You could have the timing off little bit also, And/or vaccum leaks possibly.
As for tapping how much oil do you have in the crankcase? or somethin could be movin around in there not lettin the oil get to where it should be. Otherwords I dont know what the tapping is. Does it tap with the rpm's of the engine or is it lil slower and deeper sounding? where does it sound like it comes from when it does happen? Top end or bottom?
If you want to clean the oil system out I recommend using Seafoam for that. You just put it in your truck like fillin it with oil then drive your truck for a day or two and it should be cleaned up mostly then just change the oil. My buddy was pretty impressed with how long his oil stayed clean after he ran Seafoam in the engine oiling system.

hi,
well, i did put in some fuel injector cleaner in the tank. but nothing. i haven't put any engine stuff yet. i might have some vaccum leak some were because the engine sometimes loops. so i will have to check on that. i kinda did at one time but could not find any leaks. don't know about timing, i would have to check that too. for the tapping, it is full of oil. i had changed the oil a bit back and i check it regulerly. it is STILL clean.( see through ). so its not that i dosn't have oil. the tapping only comes when the engine is at its operating temp. and i here it more off idle. like i said i can be driving and if i let go of the gas just about all the way off, it starts to tap, if its completely off, no tap, give it gas no tap. if i sit still and rev the engine i hear the tap. BUT, only warmed up.i can't tell if its a rod bearing or valve tap. not sure yet. i know that a rod bearing knocks not taps. i don't know, maybe i need to clean the oil system out. thanks.

Check your oil pump for wear too man, cuz if you have 177,000 miles on your stock pump there will be wear on the gears and such from use. The more space inside the pump can be the cause of letting the engine knock little bit at idle from not pumping enough oil through the engine, so when you can check the pump too.

well, i never worked on this type of engine but its no big deal. I'm super mechanically incline.so its not that i can't do it, its knowing were it is, which i bet is in the oil pan, which would mean i would have to drop. but as far as checking for wear. well. i wouldn't know what the wear would be. i rather just replace it. not that expensive, and if i have it in view might as well replace it for a new one. or maybe the rod bearings are wearing down... I'll have to buy a shop manual for this truck. they help allot.

Good idea on the manual. Factory ones are best.

Before you tear it down, have you changed the fuel filters to see if it helps with the running problems?

If you pull the pan, might as well plasti-gauge the bearings while it's apart.

Bdox, i haven't changed the fuel filter. ganna though. it is probably the original one. i really think that my crank bearings are going bad too. i should just replace the oil pump, bearings, and what ever else i can while i have the pan off, i don't think i will be wasting money down their. it probably needs it. but can i replace the crank bearing with just removing the pan?????
