helpppp...no reverse!!!!

okay you explorer gurus... i am in a pickle here.... had a nice day out with the wife yesterday and we were driving her 98 explorer, 4.0, automatic, 4X4, 123.000 mi. until... i place it in reverse started to back up and thump... something gave way...no more reverse....it shifts forward just fine but no backie uppie...i got a bad feelin' on this one....it felt like something just broke when i accelerated...has anyone experienced this yet??? you know how it is this time of year, reverse is important with all the one step forward and two steps back... hoping for a little guidance from you guys in the know... thank you and merry christmas and a happy new year to you... doug
