Thanks Alan. Are you going to change the cups too? That sounds like alot of work, I've never done any work on a PSD before except the UVC's the other day. It'll be a learning experience for sure if I need to do it. But I'm sure I could manage.
How are you going to check the injectors? Have them checked at a shop or just check them electrically at the injector and not the harness?
Please keep me posted. I couldn't do any work today. It poured just about all day....
WW Williams is a nation wide (almost) big rig diesel shop. Dont know if one is near you or not http://www.wwwilliams.com/home/ ,the IH dealer should be able to.
The IH shop offerd to test my trucks injectors but at $93/hr I decided to wait. They suspected the IJ's might be my problem too but said $3000 to replace all of them. They were saying it would make senseto replace all 8 at once. I almost passed out.
I'm thinking about having them perform the test, then try to find someone to replace them at lower cost.
Any ideas?
I know this has been mentioned on another thread, but have you changed the OIL in this truck? not just adding ATF, but changing it completely?
I had one giving me grief and we wound up changing the oil PLUS siphoning out the HPOP and refilling it too, just to change every bit we could get to. It did the trick. And I think I owe thanks to KWIKK on this, but I can't recall the thread.
I just had an oil change done this week but I've been keeping it plugged in overnight so I would not have known if there was a difference. I will try leaving it unplugged in a couple of days to see if there is a diff. I did not add the ATF this time since we are having a few days of below freezing temps. I used an anti-gel additive this time. I had noticed it seemed to be running just a bit quieter this week. I have the oil change regulary so I am really doubting it will be improved, but...I'll keep my fingers crossed. How hard is it to drain the HPOP? Can I just ask the shop to do it at next oil change?
Also, I have been meaning to take it back to the International dealer and let them run a check on the injectors. Do you know if this check is a simple "hook it to a machine" type test or is it open heart surgery just to see if they are the problem? Thanks for any information.
Your IH check is likely a simple cylinder contribution test done by a computer. If not, the price will triple/quadruple and that is the open heart variety. A CCT will likely tell you what you need.
You could drain the HPOP reservior via several methods. Some involve inviting a possible leak when reinstalling the oring/seal. I would suction it right out of the top but others would recomment different. Even doing that, there will still be old stuff in the rails and hoses. Somebody smarter may have a better mousetrap.
You could get a vaccuum gun, and do it that way, or you COULD use a large Hygrometer you don't need any more, or the wife's turkey baster with a tube attached.
I actually used an ancient Hygrometer that I long ago replaced with newer, smaller ones. I sucked out what I could, then used a can of seafoam to refill it and sucked it out again. THEN refilled it with fresh oil and a few ounces of the used seafoam for good measure.
