I know absolutely nothing about diesel engines. I am considering the purchase of a new F250 with the PSD for pulling my new camping trailer.
I know that diesels have a problem starting in cold weather. I also know that you can plug in to keep the block warm. My question, what if you are in a situation where you can't plug in when the weather is cold; how do you get the engine to start?
rwalser,
A Powerstroke will start. There was a post on here somewhere from a guy in Canada that does not bother to plug his in unless it's -0 degrees Fahrenheit. I live in Colorado, and although it's been a mild winter here so far, I have never plugged mine in this winter. I had a 99 PSD before, and I still never plugged it in...........Other than just for fun to see if it worked.:P New diesels are friendly. The PSD also has an exhaust restriction that warms the engine when it is started cold. You will notice it idle up a few seconds after you start it in cold weather. Honestly I would worry more about the batteries performing like they should in arctic cold. The engine will be fine. If you are still concerned, consider the V10. It has ample power to do the job as well.
relax on the cold weather starting.. just before New Years I was visitinga frind in northern British Columbia and had not plugged my truck in.. it got dfown to -22C (_14F) and I went out and started the truck.. I let the glow plugs go through 2 cycles and it started , I needed some golw plugs replaced too at the time) it chuged for a bit but smoothed out and ran just fine..... if it doesn't want to start like you are used to jusdt turn offignition and restart the secquence of the plugs a couple of times.. it will go...
good driving
