Flareside beds

I've located a couple of flareside beds. Both need a lot of work. One has a "14 ton" steel plate floor which would need to be cut out and rust repair. The other needs all new wood and rust repair. What I need to know is how much should I pay for a bed that is in good shape needing very little work? How rare are the wood floor beds?

Thanks Charles

What year model are the beds? The wood beds were discontinued and replaced with the steel. I don't recall what year that was. The steel is certainly more durable but I like the look of the wood. Also, are you going to use the bed to haul things? If so, I would use the steel because of the durability. Things to consider...

The wood bed is of unknown year it is sitting by itself. Does anyone know what was the last year the wood beds were used? What changed from 56 to 57 on these beds?

My parts book shows 51 as the first year for wood floor beds and 1972 as the last year. This may be because they only handle 48-72 Ford parts. One wood kit fits 52-72. There are different metal strip kits depending on the year. 51-52, 53-60, 61-64, 65-72.
Depending on where you live, a new box complete runs $1500 or more. Wood, strips and bolts could be $400-500 depending on steel or stainless.

Ranger Pat,

Thank you for the information. Do you know a way to determine what year bed I've found. The fenders look like some I,ve seen on a mid 60's I think. There should be some styling changes that would identify the years. I would like to have the fenders that should be on the 57. I think they would be ths same from 57 - 60. If you could help me with this I would appreciate it. By the way my truck is a 57 F100 shortbed (currently a styleside). There isn't a tailgate to help me.
When you said "complete" did you mean from frame crosspieces up. I'm assuming that this would be a kit that you would have to paint and assemble. That seems like a decent price.
could you give me some company names?

Thank you Charles

LAST EDITED ON 30-May-01 AT 11:21 PM (EST)[p]Charles,
I have a stepside bed w/fenders on a 64 F100 parts truck that a guy told me was the same from 1953 to 1972. I'm wishing that my 57 Stileside bed was in better shape, maybe we need to talk. Email me at irlobuck(No Email Addresses In Posts!) if you are interested.

My understanding is that 48-72 are the same. The fenders are the same from 53-72. I believe that you can mix and match.

Flareside beds

I got a "used" (very very much used) stepside bed for my '56 from a later model. It bolted up as it was supposed to, but the running boards did not seem to match up with the rear fenders as they were supposed to. As I plan to eventually replace the bed and running boards (they are in rough shape, but better than nothing) I haven't worried about it. However I believe I heard something about the 57 and later models having the fenders mounted slightly higher on the bed. Can anybody verify that?

I believe the same basic bed was used until up around 1976, but a cutout in the bed and drivers fender was added to accomodate the rear mounted gas tank. Also at some point, the "angled" top edge was changed to flat. But (from my observation - no guarantee) they appear to be swappable. I considered one from about a 1975 model a while back. I may find out I'm glad I passed on it.
