1950 F-1; Thinking about just going ahead and replacing the 6v motor in my heater with a 12v version rather than messing with the multiple voltage reducers and wiring (the motor is over 50 years old!). Anybody got a line on where I could get a 12v motor for it? Thankuen's.
A guy I know has several 1950 trucks, and swears you can gut the heater core and fan out of a Suzuki Samuri and put it right into the original heater box in the cab.
I have a 50 myself, but haven't got to that point yet.
I used the heater motor out of a 1989 Ford ranger. Same size motor, fits the original hole in firewall, and it it of course 12 volts. Nice easy swap to 12 v.
48-55 use the same 6v blower motor. 56 was the first 12v blower so it has to interchange with 48-55. You can get one from LMC Truck for $25, Mid-Fifty for $89, Early Ford Parts for $75 or Obsolete Ford Parts for $85. . Look at http://www.lmctruck.com
LMC doesn't have tech. support so I confirmed with Sac. Vintage that the 56-60 12v is an trade out swap for the 48-55 6v. (motor is a little longer but it doesn't matter). Then I ordered the 12v motor from LMC for $30. Sac. Vintage wants $75.
Thanks for your help. If it doesn't work I'll let you know.
Pretty good tips here.. I too still have the original 6v heater.. And it still works after 50 years... I run a voltage reducer in the line as my truck is now 12 volt. Thanks for the tip on LMC truck.. I have been ordering through Sac Vintage for years had no idea there was a huge difference in price from these 2 places..
Got the LMC 12v motor. Not even close, so back it goes. I'm just going to go with the original 6v blower motor and use Ron Francis' 15amp reducer. Tested it out, works great.
I have a 51 F-1 and it's about 90% restored but is still
missing the whole heating system. I've gone through about 4
salvage yards (July in Texas @ 100F!) and looked for anything
that would work. I need the heater core, box, fan, etc..it's
all missing.
The suzuki samurai tips sounds good, but if i can't find one of
those, I may try an electric heater-defroster-fan found in the
JC Whitney catalog. It measures 6"wide X 4.25"deep X 3"high and
blows heat immediately. 12v and 10 amp
