looking for a new tail shaft for a BW 1356 transfer. one with the adapter for the speedometer. I recently destroyed my 8.8 and replaced it with a 9 inch, so now I have no speedometer. Any help would be greatly appriciated.
If that truck is 1992 or over, the speed sensor at 1356 output shaft is not going to work UNLESS you use some sort of electronic adapter to get the proper pulse per mile signal.
More over you need also change the T-case output shaft and obtain the pinion ring and metalic sphere wich is used on T-case 1991 and older.
there is a special retro fit kit made for this problem. it has a replacement yoke for the 9 inch and a mount kit for the sensor. i just cant remember what magazine i was it in. i only have about 600 4wd mags. as soo as i find it, ill im you.
I will be chaning out the entire gauge cluster. I am pulling all of the wiring harness to get rid of the computer. I will be using a universal wiring harness from painless to wire the truck.
another 8.8 axle would be cheaper and simpler to do. if your truck is new than 92 that sensor in the axle is going to control your abs, speedo, and cruise control. which is a lot of work to rewire.
on the other hand. i had put a painless wiring kit in my 78 f150 4x4 and it was by far the best investment i put into that truck. only problem i had was the ignition cause ford changed colors so often it took a couple of tries to match everything up with the kit. if you can get everything wired up it will be good, but that's going to be a lot of work.
8.8 will not hold up to the hp and torque of a blower motor. I am not real sure that the 9inch will. But we shall see. As far the harness goes, it will be cheaper and easier in the long run.
9inchers are run by dragsters, they will hold up to the power, but depending how much power you are going to run you may need to step up to 35 spline shafts.
The only problem with going up to 35 spline axles is that I would have to change housing to accomidate the larger bore bearings. At least as far as all of the research I have done so far. That is why I am staying with the 31 splines that are in the housing. If or more likely when they break I will up grade.
