Like I said in a previous post, I am considering the purchase of an '86 F150 4x4 300I6 with 4 speed manual. I've never bought a truck before, what symptoms of trouble should I look for in this truck? What are the most common problems with these trucks so i can evaluate the condition of this one. It has 136K and seems to be decent except for the looseness of everything and the brakes. The owner said the carburetor needs work, it kind of surges and hesitates when driving, especially when cold. Would just replacing the carb fix all the related problems? It seems to be a very good deal, I just want to be ready for whatever major fixes are in store as best i can. I appreciate all the help I can get. Thanks.
check very close for rust around rear window, wind sheild, door jams under and if you can pull back the carpet by the door look there, check for water leaks, make sure guter is clean and not rusted out, make sure it dont leak oil like a frate train, make sure it has a dicent oil presure, listen for knocks ticks and clunks on the engine, make sure tranny shifts good.
as far as the in line 6, that seems to be a popular engine ford put in there trucks. i hear the inlines are good strong motors.
i hoop this answer you questions.
oh i wouldnt pay no more then a 1000.00 and it has to be mid to top shape for that.
If you can I would check all fluid levels Diff's Tcase tranny etc. When I bought my 84 it had no oil in the rear diff was overfull in the tranny and very little in the front. Good thing I only payed $240
