Yes, it is highly recommended, also you might want to consider deleting the CAT while your at it. Buy a down pipe, unbolt the cat from the bottom of the down pipe (I would also remove the cat to give yourself more room), unbolt the top of the down pipe, push the down pipe up as far as you can, use a sawzall to cut off the cobra head, push the pipe down and cut it again and then work it out.
Then use a porta-power (the easiest) or wood block, pry bar and hammer and flatten the firewall seam. Then install the new down pipe and/or cat delete pipe.
Check the vendors on this site for a down pipe and cat delete pipe.
thank you for the info. i boutht the down pipe a couple of months ago. some people i talked to told me this could not be done. i did not think they would sell a product that could not be used. thet told me the only way to do it was to give the truck a 3in lift and loosen the motor mounts and slide it forward. once connected slide it back. have you done this before? how much of a difference did it mack? P.S. i already have a straight pip on it.
No need to loosen the motor mounts. Cutting the old one apart to get it out of there is necessary. A 2" body lift actually makes for enough room to put the new one in without bending the firewall seam lip. 3" would make it even easier. A 2" lift can be installed without any major modifications to linkage and shifting levers. With a 3" lift you will probably have to substantially alter your shifting and 4X4 levers to get them to come up far enough to get through the floor and then be the right shape to still fit the layout of the floor shape. I highly recommend the 2 inch lift kit!
As stated above, you can install the down pipe on a stock truck by flattening the firewall seam. Just make sure you do a test fit to make sure it is not touching the firewall or it will sound like your trucks coming apart when you run it.
to clarify for you, you don't need a lift to fit the pipe. It does require cutting the large pinch weld in two spots and bending it flat against the firewall. cutting the old pipe out is needed. get a good sawzall or torch or plasma cutter and cut as far down from the top in the engine compartment as you can the pull the top piece out the top and the bottom piece out the bottom.
