*** CLIFF NOTES: How can I wire an aftermarket head unit so that it dimms with the controler for the instrument cluster? ***
DETAILS:
I've installed a Sony head unit and everything is working fine with one exception. The Head unit had 2 wires for illumination. one is Orange (constant) and the other is orange w/ black stripe (dimmer).
Right now the system is wired for illumination using the solid orange wire. The display is bright and only dimms when the lights are turned on. The Orange w/ black stipe wire is capped and not used (Listed as NA from factory on most places I've looked).
What I want to know is if there is a way to control the variable dimming capability of the aftermarket head unit display with the dimmer control for the instrument cluster? If so, where do I splice and with which wire, Orange or Orange w/ black stripe?
This is what I was told on another forum. Gonna have to see about trying this. I thought I'd post it, incase anyone else was curious.
Ok, there should be an orange/white that is for the illumination. And an orange or orange/black that is for the dimmer. Find out if the aftermarket deck has negative or a positive dimmer first. Then, if you have a volt meter, plug in the harness into the truck. Turn on the truck, meter the wire using your dimmer on the dash. If the meter starts around 12 volts then goes down to zero when you lower the dimmer, you have a negative dimmer. If the meter starts at zero then goes to 12 volts when you lower the dimmer, you have a positive dimmer.
