BAD NEWS TODAY I TOOK MY 2004 F-150 FX4 IN TO DEALER FOR ENGINE KNOCK ON RIGHT SIDE.TURNS OUT 3 LIFTERS STUCK CAM LOBES WORN AND ROCKER ARM DAMAGE.$2,000 TO REPAIR.HAS ANYONE HEARD OF THIS TYPE OF FAILURE WITH ONLY 71K ON A 5.4 TRITON?!
I had the same knock on my 04 last week. It was the phasers. I repaired it, traded it and got an 06 F150 King Ranch.
I only had 49K miles... I thought is was just "my truck"... Good Luck
It seems that every service department will say, if they do not have an answer, that the noise is normal. I thought that by the 21st century, they would have some of the 30-year old issues fixed.
any motor can have a lifter fail and do damage. it's not a new item to us old time wrenches. enfact it's as old as lifters are and it's not uncommon in any motor.
are you the first owner? we never know how well cared for a vehicle was when not. as many people who lease for 2 years. and many of them fail to properly maintain a vehicle. i've even had them say i'm only renting it why should i care for it.
as to cause i would say you had a oil pressure problem to the top end that caused the lifter to fail and then wipe out the camshaft
yes the price is costly but the labor is also very hard.
I am the original owner and have treated the truck with respect every mile. I tow a 3k pound trailer maybe 150 miles a year. The dealer, after repeated trips, finally said that, yes, there is a noise in the engine but there was not much they could do. I took the complaint to Ford and, without consulting me, their regional rep added a non-transferrable extended warranty (albeit without charge) to 80k miles. I currently have 51k miles so that will not last long. I offered to settle for a transferrable 100k extended warranty or, better yet, fix the motor as I have a $38k vehicle that sounds like I don't keep it fed with oil until it reaches temperature. It's embarrasing, to say the least. They said sorry but "no". Ford's problems, I am sure, stem from their losing money and shorting R&D and dealer service departments. I am the kind of guy they need to keep.
Sorry to ramble but I am fast losing faith in Ford and it is very sad.
I BOUGHT THE TRUCK TWO WEEKS AGO AT AUCTION KNOCK DIDNT SEEM THAT BAD BUT MORE I DROVE IT DID NOT SEEM NORMAL ON THE GOOD SIDE I GOT IT FOR $13,500.EVEN AFTER REPAIR IM STILL IN AN "04" FX4 SUPER CAB FOR $15,500 .REST OF TRUCK SHOWS AS NEW CHECK OUT MY GALLERY>
it's not a major problem infact it is a very rare problem in a 4.6, 5.4 or a 6.8. this is not a new motor, it's been around since the early 1990's starting in the lincoln. r and d was not short by any means with this motor line. something happened that caused it to lose oil in the top end . no oil and the cam shaft and followers will wipe out very fast,
only thing is if you have proof of proper maintinace got for it and try to prove you made compliants while it was under warrenty and any free extended warrenty is better then nothing. esp for free.
Really sorry for your misfortune! I always tell people if you plan on buying at an auction you better be a good mechanic and take your compression guage, flashlight, stethescope, and OBDII scanner with you (or pay a mechanic to go with you). It might help someone else reading this. My trade in 97 F150 was in pretty bad shape and guess what the dealer was going to do with it? That's right - clean it up and sell it at auction.
I bought mine brand new and have always completed the required service. The oil question is a good one and was also asked by the service manager. However, type and viscosity were, in fact, correct. They just need to fix the flaw in the engine, however rare the problem. Have a safe and Merry Christmas and Hap...Happ..(hic)...Happy New Year (using my best Arthur impression)!
it's not a flaw man. it's just some thing that happened and could even happen to a rolls royce.
i don't know why people always blame the factory buy saying things like flaw or many others. if your not. happy because some thing happened, sell it .trade it, but dont say things that are false.
another tick me off is that this site is full of great dealer ship techs and few factory feild guys who all go out of their way to help the members out. so what do we hear a lot, stealership,!! we have no control over what it costs to turn the keys and open the shop up. we just work there. any one care to know the average is 20k a day. just to open the shop up. thats why the rates are high.

Ive said this on several occasions in the past. MANY of the fixes and information avaliable on this site came from FORD technicians or people who know Ford employees. Yet people will slap you down and insult you with this crap everyday. I had about 2 thousand posts the first year here.... I stopped posting for a good long while due to the disrespect and ingratitude. Hell none of us are perfect but we give out info freely all the while knowing we are likely taking good earnings from our fellow techs around the country.
I guess Id rather help a shade tree do it right than to spend a week undoing what they screwed up to get to what was originally wrong with it. Heh..
Dont expect all these people to respect Ford and Ford techs.... its just not in some of them. They werent raised right... But there ARE a lot of them that actually do give respect and appreciation. And I appreciate learning some new things along the way myself. I sure dont know everything and I never will.
there seems to be a rotten egg in every group in a dealership or on a ford forum.i for one really enjoy and appreciate when techs post.dont stop because of a few rotten eggs.
