Stalling problem

I have a 73 302 V8 with manual trans that has begun to stall on me. I have read the posts on stalling and I'm going to start working on the truck tomorrow to hopefully resolve the problem. The truck will stall when I come to a stop, or making a turn. It will idle but once in gear it will stall. Also it wont do it all the time, I drove to the store with it stalling, after about 10 minutes in the store and then back into the truck, it didn't stall anymore on the way home. Any ideas on what could be causing this.
I did install a new gas cap with a tighter fitting, the old one was not tight and gas would spill out when I was driving. Could this cause some kind of vacum problem with sending gas to the engine? Any ideas would help with the work?
Also the way it stalls in it just dies, no smoke, shaking or anything, just dies.

Jason

The previous gas cap was a locking one that was just barley on, it would shake. The on I bought to replace so the gas would stop spilling is just a plain non locking cap that fits snug and does not shake

I donm;t think you understand what I mean.

Theer are all sorts of different caps per application.

Vented caps
Non-Vented caps

in both locking and no locking.

Plus special emissions caps,.

EDIT: I just noticed it is a 73 and not a 78 . I thought the 3 was an 8

Thanks for the info, I didn't know there was vented and non-vented gas caps. But could this lead to stalling? Or is it something more important? What does the venting of a gas cap do? Thanks for all the info again

Once had a mower that would not run I tried everything then I saw someone had lost the gas cap and put a jelly jar lid on it.With no vent the tank could not let any gas out or air in.Replaced the cap and it ran fine.

I put a new fuel filter on the other day, and no results that made me happy. I have been noticing that it stalls when it's cold, but this is after I have let it warm up after maybe a couple of minutes. It will stall when I'm not in gear or don't have my foot on the pedal. But it seems to stop once I have been driving around for maybe a half hour. So either I'm thinking maybe a choke kind of problem or something my small brain can't think of right now. Anyone have an idea of what I should look at next?
Thanks

One thing you guys can check is the shaft bushings on the carb for being worn out and leaking air.
Spray some carb cleaner around both ends of the shaft and listen for changes.

I used a carb cleaner on it while it was running when I did the fuel filter, and it did have a bit of a change as far as ideling. Is this the kind of changes you are talking about?
