I have a 2004 F-150 with power side mirrors. I was thinking about upgrading to the stock power mirrors that are heated and have the turn signals on them. I have a few questions.
Do the heated/turn signal mirrors use the same wiring harness as the regular power mirrors?
How hard would it be to get the mirrors off and put the new ones on?
Do the heated mirrors have a switch that you manually turn them on and off with or do they constantly stay heated?
I just tried to put the power, signal heated mirrors on my 04 screw fx4 and the signals work but the heat doesn't. I tried to put the missing fuse into the fuse box and found out that the wiring harness from the fuse box to the mirror isn't even there, not even any contacts in the fuse box. So unless you are plpanning on doing some fancy custom wiring to put in an aftermarket switch and inline fuse with a relay the heated mirrors won't work on a truck that didn't come stock with them from the assembly line.
Make sure you have another set of hands to put that mirror in. In order to do so you have to take the whole inside door panel off, which isnt that big of deal. But getting that thing back on can be kinda tricky.....definately not a piece of cake. I had to replace my one mirror and I had to call my old man over to help me get the panel back on, after I said lot of four letter words!
Also thinking of doing this upgrade. Any idea on what the cost of the OEM switch for heated windows is? Hopeing to do a smooth installation so that I do not have to drill any new holes. Wireing diagrams imply that the power for the heater is in the harness to the mirror. Is this correct? If so, that would simplify the install. Undestand the OEM time limit for factory heated mirrors but I like the idea of having them on all of the time in rainy or bad weather. Did some big rig driving and found their heated mirror setup great. Any idea as to price and part number for the manual A/C, heated windows and air source switch? Any other issues to address for the installation?
Not a good idea to have them on all time as they would burn out the heating element behind the mirror. That's why the rear defog and mirrors have timed controls. My VW had heated mirrors and ended up replacing the glass because the switch wasn't timed.
i did this upgrade when i owned my superduty. for the heater, i just ran new wires, and put them through a seperate toggle switch. i left it on constantly in the winter, and then off in the summer. but, i wasnt worried about ruining the glass, our air temps in the winter took care of any "over heating" issues. do the 150's even have a factory switch for the mirror heater? it was my understanding on the SD that they were on anytime the key was on. looking at the wiring diagram it appears as such.
Many of you may be aware that the heated mirrors work very well when the air is moist or in rainy weather. There does not need to be snow or cold weather to get benefit from using them.
Yes, down here in coastal Texas, snow and ice aren't the problem. When I had my car(with heated mirrors), they helped clear off the morning dew and condensation. That's what I miss most about having them.
Ya that's a good point. Here in southern california snow and ice aren't so much the problem (although this winter has been weird). The defroster helps take care of rain that would normally obstruct the mirror. Especially if the truck has been sitting all night/day.
