The truck, 1999 F350, has a factory air to oil cooler only.
Not an oil to coolant cooler as stated on previous posting.
The truck also has the sensor located in the line tap next to the MLP sensor.
The temp was 170 on the road and 180 in stop and go, with an outside temp of
58. Does this sound too high for a 99 F350?
Thanks again for any input.
If your sensor is here then those temps sound a little high for 50 -60 degree ambients.
The temps on the output side of the tranny (OEM Sensor) will be 40 -60 degrees higher
Normally temps will run 60 - 100 above ambient in that spot. In the 50's and 60's ambient i usually see 110 to 125 unloaded and 140 - 150 with a 3K - 4K trailer on the tranny gauge. The tru cool mentioned in the other post will bring those temps down.
Tru Cools are a good product.
A lot of guys use the newer 6.0L tranny coolers too with great results.
If you can find the 6.0 one on ebay or Craigslist might save you some $$$
If we are getting high trans temps in 58 (14C) ambient temps as in this post above, what tranny temps might one expect, towing 7500lbs in 103 (40C) - 110f (43C) ambient temps, with just the deep pan and oil cooler mods??
Is this enough modification to cope with extreme heat temps when towing?...
Is there any OTHER 'viable' way to further cool the tranny temps for towing duty in severe heat conditions?
Back during the summer in low 100's unloaded i was seeing 195*F looking at the temp in Autoengineuity (before I had gauges) but the OEM sender I was looking at is in the output side (Higher Temps). If I had gauges then it would have read about 150 on the gauge with the sender in the above location. I have nothing but OEM cooling as of now.
With good cooling (6.0L cooler, TruCool) you should probably expect 180 -190 hauling that boat. Normally we say 60 to 100 *F above ambient is considered normal.
