I posted this in the oil and lubrication forum as well but later thought it might be more appropriate in this forum.
I have recently purchased an oil temp guage for my 2001 F-350 PSD and want to know if the truck already has an oil cooler that I can tap into or where would I place the sensor. I am not very familiar with the diesel and need a little advice.

Ted
There's an oil temp sensor on the back of the HPOP resevoir which is under the black plastic engine cover. The sensor is to the right side of the reservoir down a few inches. You'll see the wire connection to the sensor(thermistor). The one
sensor on top of the resevoir and to the left is the low pressure oil sensor.

Can I install the sensor that came with the oil temp gauge here or do I need to look elsewhere on the engine? Do I need to look at an aftermarket cooler and put a sensor in the line to the cooler? Just some questions. I just rolled the truck of 100,000 miles and what to monitor everything I can. Thanks for the help.
Sorry Ted i haven't installed an oil temp gauge yet. What does the instructions say? BTW, oil temp is low on my priority list . I would go with fuel pressure, boost, tranny temp and EGT. Reverse order for priority.

I have the tranny temp gauge installed with a perma cool cooler added. With no load the tranny runs about 125 to 130. You put a load on it and it runs 150 to 180 depending upon the time of day. I am slowly going to add all the necessary gauges for boost, fuel pressure, pyrometer, water temp and oil pressure over the next year, but I have the oil temp gauge now and wanted to hook it up so there in lies the question. I have a buddy that works on diesels that I am also trying to get the answer from.
I would connect it to one of the ports on the top of the oil filter flange.
You don't need an extra oil cooler for the engine, it already has a huge one. It's that cylindrical object just below the drivers side exhaust manifold.
I have my Banks engne oil temp gauge pumbed into a port at the oil filter manifold.
I just zip-tied the wire up through the firewall and into the cab and gauge pod
