Dead Truck!!!
Truck just died at a major intersection... Maybe ran out of diesel but the digital readout offered 20 mile till empty. With that in mind, I just replaced 2 resisistors in the digital readout so I don't know if it is calibrated.
Does the 2001 F250 Lariat 7.3 diesel self prime or is there something I should knowafter adding diesel to tank via gas-can...
No indication that the truck was about to die...Just died on the way to gas station..
Any info wiil be gladly accepted...
Good luck, Joe
You shouldnt have to prime it the pump should suck it right up. Some people do fill the fuel bowl with fuel so the injectors arent dry. Like joe sadi cycle the key a couple of times and you should be fine.
May I add that I added 3 gallons of diesel to the tank after the incident and still wouldn't start. Must I add more fuel to the tank? What do you think???

, etc, then see if you need to put more in. If it is full when you first look, or the fuel level does not go down, put cap back on and try. If there is no hum from the pump under the driver seat, fuel pump may be dead or no voltage there. Need to track that down then.Edit, if you suspect the fuel pump is not running, hit it with a rubber mallet and see if that gets her going. If that works, the pumps life is limited and I suspect it will happen again.
For that reason alone I never, ever, ever, (did I say never?
) run below 1/4 tank on any vehicle.
I have done it once.
That's all it took. Like Kwik, when the light comes on start looking.
They gave me a grocery list of problems but could only pull one code; a CMP code/P0340.
1) Fuel pump burned out
2) Replace Fuel pressure regulator
3) Replace fuel drain
4) Bad CMP sensor (just had that replaced in October)
5) Replace fuel filter and lid.
Needless to say, I felt violated after receiving the grocery list of problems, especially since I just paid over$1500.00 in October to have several sensors and switches replaced. The current estimate for the above grocery list was almost $1300.00 before tax and that wasn't including the CMP sensor.
I opted out of the transaction and made plans to have the truck towed to my property for further inspection. I know the defective fuel pump would ultimately stop the truck in its tracks but can't say if the pump went faulty after trying to crank the engine with no diesel in the lines.
Any thoughts?

1) a.) i would only say that the pump is burnt if you cant hear it running anymore when cycling the key. Geta friend or a significant other in there to crank and go under the truck and put your hand against the pump , feel if its workin.
b.) Your inlet side of the pump may be clogged at the screen no along any fuel to enter the pump due to running the tank so low. in other words you picked up a lot of crap at the bottom of the tank. You can remove the pump and tuen it upside down and slighltly tap it against a work bench to unclog it.
2) I dont have any experience with the FPR so another member can post about that.
3)Maybe, i say maybe the cmp but it usualy restarts then dies 2 miles again down the road, Im not rulling it out but it usualy dies hard with a cmp, not cough.
4)Fuel drain? If yours isnt leaking (Fuel in the valley of the engine) and it drains the fuel when you open your valve, and stops draining when you shut it youre good to go!
5)I would definately replace your filter after running that low on fuel. Even if fuel isnt your issue. Fuel filter lid? They are smoking you know what. The oem style lids seal the best and rarely need to be replaced. I can only imagine replacing one if you strip out your threads on the lid. That hardly ever happens.
sounds to me like they were getting ready to throw some serious parts at it!. Did they give you a readout on the codes with the estimate? If so you need to post them. If they didnt i assume you paid a fee for the diagnostic/evluation of the repair. Go back and get the codes they pulled. I hope this helps. Still need more info on the staus of fuel pump....running or not and codes.
Tim
on edit: i just saw that they pulled a code for the cmp(CPS), did you replace it yourself yet? everything else above still applys.
