LIKENIT, there were definitly no 3.73s avalible on the V10s in 05' and newere trucks, only 4.10s and 4.30s. The 3.73s you are seeing are the only option for the diesel though, that is unless you bought a dually in which I think you could get 4.10s with the diesel. From 99-04, 3.73s seem to be the most commen rear gear ratio for the V10s and I'm not sure if 4.30s were offered in anything but duallys. can't remember if 4.10s were offered or not during those years??? Someone esle will have to help clarify that part!
SLE,
I have the 99 V-10 and I ordered it with the 4.30s. The other option was the 3.73 for the 6.8 V-10.
There was 3,000 lbs difference in the tow rating between the two.
I drive a 00 Exursion LTD 4X4 V-10/4.30 occassionally, but mainly for towing my 31" travel trailer. I am humbled by the loads I see everyone else pulling because my GCVW was only 17,300 on the last trip that was 3400 miles round both ways. I do not know the grades I was on but I went from CHicago to Key West. I stayed in OD going 70 most of the times getting about 7-8 depending on the hills and it only downshifted once to 2nd for a really steep pass but I held 60 mph through it (in TN) alll the other times it would only go to 3rd and keep 70 no problem. Empty on the expressway I get 15 mpg and pulling on flatlands at 60 (or 65mph) I see 10 mpg taking it to dealer locally.
My dads 02 V10 with SRW and 3.37 gears pulled our 20K+ excavator on our 26' triple axle goose neck trailer and we weighed it to see how far from legal we were with truck and everything it weight 32,000 so we called the DOT they said it would be OK the only thing they told him was to make sure would could stop. It pulled it pretty well for the weight,
I pulled our tanker it is a freight liner with 4 axles and a 4000 gallon tank, we had a load of oil and i figure it was around 50K (20 for the truck and 30 for the oil) it was stuck in a mud hole, so we hooked up a tow strap, i put it in four low and got a running start and pulled the fricken thing out ( this was before the SC) i was impressed.
Ok guys, are you ready for this? I pulled a 1000lbs. trailer (thats right, ONE THOUSAND POUNDS, thats not even including the weight of my truck) WITH a 650lbs. Kingquad 700 in the bed last elk season. My V10 pulled it with ease, even with the cow elk in the back.
Hello,
I have a 03 Excursion v10, 3.73 gear, I pull a 32' bumper pull TT. Dry weight on the camper is 7200 lbs. So loaded with water tank full and everything in the camper I would say at least 8000 lbs. I average 7 to 8 mpg when towing. Not bad considering everything I am moving down the road.
Jeff
I have an '02 SRW, crew cab short box, 4x4, 97K miles. I pull a 30' fifth wheel which is approx 12K lbs. I get 5 mpg towing w/o OD, and approx. 7 w/ OD. I don't use OD unless I am over 60mph and on flat land. Don't really feel like burning up a tranny...
I have an '08 F 350 cc long bed 20" wheels with 4:30 gears. I pull a 4700 lb work trailer and I also have a 7200lb travel trailer, truck weighs 9520lbs so when pulling the tt I weigh 16720lbs, I still have over 6,000lbs to go to meet my GCWR, maybe it is time for a bigger tt.
Hello,
Dry weight on the camper is 7200 lbs. So loaded with water tank full and everything in the camper I would say at least 8000 lbs.Jeff
Jeff, I'm willing to bet your much closer to 9k lbs than 8K. I have found over the years that with about any camper I've had that when loaded they consistantly wiegh 2k lbs more depending on what we load and I've seen 2500lbs a couple of times for extended trips! I mean just the water alone (50gal x 8.34) is 420lbs, don't forget about food, clothing, linens, grills, propane, batteries, firewood, a Generator, dishes, coolers filled with ice and beverages, and the list goes on and on; This all adds up real fast! Just something to think about when packing the ol camper.
I can proudly say that my ol V10 will be working hard this summer, I don't have any pics yet but I'll be toting the same 98' wildwood 26fls camper (as shown in my gallery) with a new (new to me) 20ft Yarcraft boat in tandem. I'm not sure what the actual weight of the boat is But I'm estimating it to be about 3500lbs when loaded. This should bring my total weight for the truck, camper, boat and all of our goodies up to around 19lbs-20klbs. I do believe the ol 3.73s wiil be on the way out in place of 4.56s next winter!
I tow a 14,000 lb toyhauler. 2000 X V10, 4x4 lifted 315x75x16 tires 4.88 gear. I get 5 ish on the hills of So.Cal.... and about 7-8 on the flats at 65 I can hold OD. on the flats otherwise its 3rd at 60mph..
I have a 2004 E-350 4x4 with V10 constantly loaded with around 10k lbs. in the box and have no problem pulling small equipment around like tractor or bobcat.
