I know a few girls that sometimes carry pepper spray around with them when they are going out. Is this legal? Would someone be allowed to carry it around in their vehicle without getting into trouble for it?
I know there are several police officers on this forum, and I know they can't answer for every state, but I would like to hear what they have to say.
Maybe it depends on where you live. My wife carrys it on her because when she gets off work she has to walk through a dark parking lot. You can also bye it at Wal-Mart in my part of the USA.

Pepper-spray is considered "non-lethal"....unlike a gun or a knife....so no permit is needed to carry or keep concealed...like a gun. It IS, however, a self-defense tool, so use it for that purpose only....against attack from aggressive animals and people. Do not carry into airports and court buildings......it'll be confiscated.
Here in taxachusetts you simply need a mace/OC license available for $25. I know a lot of girls that carry the spray in a maglite looking aluminum body that is refillable. Good to have I think.
In CA it is based on size. Mace is almost non existent any more as we have gone the way of pepper spray. Non LE folks can carry sizes up to 2.5 oz (I think and am to lazy to get the penal code out at this time) with no special permit or training.
My wife never leaves the house without a canister attached to her key ring.
Even though most states require no special training I would encourage anyone using it for the first time to buy two canisters. The first canister would be to learn how to use it and the other would be to carry with you. Use the first can to get a feel for distance and spray pattern. Ideal is to spray for the eyebrow area.
Also get the type with the "dye" in it. It marks the sprayed person with a red dye making them an easy spot for LE.
Galls is a nationwide LE supplier and has a great selection.
There is a lot ot talk about this in Canada these days.
Some of us think people should be able to carry something like this or a taser to protect themselves...and then there are the people who think other people should just be defenseless because if there are too many weapons around ....... more people will get hurt by people just carrying or those trying to defend thselves.
Oh yes nice little gizmos..I have mixed concerns about them being legal though. My wife took a set of brass knuckles (the kind made to kill, with the little daggers on each fingerloop)from 3 students in middle school 2 weeks ago..
My wife has pepper spray with her at all times but I don't think she could find it if she needed it with all the crap she carrys in her purse would be better to just beat someone to death with her purse
